Hi guys and thank you for taking the time to read this and try to help.
I have a bad habit of typing as I think, instead of typing what I mean, so I will try to clarify for you.
There is only one PC with a problem, my old PC running Win98 that has now gone to the kids. I am using my new Leader PC using XP to type this. We do not have a network cable attached and the two PC are in different buildings at our home/office site.
So the actual issue is, I cannot browse the web with the Win98 machine. It was working fine until I downloaded AVG, quarantined a trojan downloader, and then uninstalled NAV 2004, that had not found the trojan. I believe I also uninstalled the symantec shared files but cannot swear to this, I have been trying to find out what went wrong since 24/09/06.
We can hear the dial out and I could ipconfig the Win98 machine and get an IP address, but IE simply could not load any page. AVG update could not connect, error message read "The server name cannot be converted to the IP address".
I contacted an IT mate and was able to ping his router using the IP address, but that was all, nothing else we tried, him talking to me over the phone, worked. So I googled help from this XP machine and this site came up.
So yesterday when I tried to ping
www.computerhope.com and it did not work, my OWN head is spinning.
Now I have re-read Fed's answer, did he want me to use this new XP machine to ping
www.computerhope.com? Yes that works from here. Sorry for any confusion
