IE not connecting when internet is connected
« on: October 13, 2006, 10:18:04 PM »
I have recently purchased a new PC and the old one has gone to my children.  The new PC is excelent, but now the old PC with Win98 cannot use the internet even though it is connected.  All was working fine until I decided to load AVG as my NAV registration was about to run out.  I downloaded the free version and this found adkhost.exe and ADLSP.DLL, which are now in the Virus Vault.

My other PC is Win98 and when I uninstalled NAV I think I said yes to shared files as well.  Now even though we can hear the dial in to the internet and the fax line is busy, IE cannot connect to the server and the message I get is "The page cannot be displayed".  I can ping my friends router, but I cannot "see" it.  I ran system checker and some of the Symantec shared files were missing among other things, but could not find these files on Win98 original disc or NAV 2004 original disc.  I also have a AOL free trial disc, so I installed that to see if it helped but got the message cannot find server.

I have also got Lavasoft Adaware installed, but now when I try to open it it has caused an exeption eedfadeH in module unknown and then repeats the message in German.  Now this sounds virusy, but I have just run AVG full scan again, the last download was 24/09/06 and nothing was found.

I have modified this message to include a bit more info so can anyone suggest a place to find the files I need?  Or is this not the problem? :-?

Hi Fed,  I was helped through the ping thing, I thought you could only ping numbers?  I am on my new PC currently.  To ping I opened Dos window and typed ping 000.000.0.00 with the numbers supplied me.  As these two PC are 30 metres apart, can you tell me how to ping www.computerhope?
    thanks

Sure, open a dos window and type....

      ping www.computerhope.com

      and hit enter.

I just re-read your edits in your original post, what a head spin. LOL

        Let's get this straight...

        The kid's computer...
How do you know it has an internet connection?

        Your new computer...
How do you know it has an internet connection?

You can use ping to test this on both computers.

Perhaps we would be better off just fixing them one at a time?
You choose which one to start with.

It's always a bad idea to edit posts after they have been read. Just make a new post and correct your errors. You don't want Fed's head to spin, believe me.  ;)

Hi guys and thank you for taking the time to read this and try to help.  ;D

I have a bad habit of typing as I think, instead of typing what I mean, so I will try to clarify for you.
There is only one PC with a problem, my old PC running Win98 that has now gone to the kids.  I am using my new Leader PC using XP to type this.  We do not have a network cable attached and the two PC are in different buildings at our home/office site.

So the actual issue is, I cannot browse the web with the Win98 machine.  It was working fine until I downloaded AVG, quarantined a trojan downloader, and then uninstalled NAV 2004, that had not found the trojan.  I believe I also uninstalled the symantec shared files but cannot swear to this, I have been trying to find out what went wrong since 24/09/06.

We can hear the dial out and I could ipconfig the Win98 machine and get an IP address, but IE simply could not load any page.  AVG update could not connect, error message read "The server name cannot be converted to the IP address".

I contacted an IT mate and was able to ping his router using the IP address, but that was all, nothing else we tried, him talking to me over the phone, worked.  So I googled help from this XP machine and this site came up.

So yesterday when I tried to ping www.computerhope.com and it did not work, my OWN head is spinning.

Now I have re-read Fed's answer, did he want me to use this new XP machine to ping www.computerhope.com?  Yes that works from here.  Sorry for any confusion  :-*

        Hi again,
I have done a bit more testing, I know the old Win98 PC is connected to something because the fax line it is sharing is in use and I cannot dial up from this new XP machine.

I ran ipconfig on the old machine again and there are three Ethernet adaptors.
0 Ehternet has IP as 0.0.0.0
        Subnet Mast as 0.0.0.0
         and an empty Default Gateway
Then there is 1 Ethernet adaptor that has numbers for IP and Subnet Mast but again an empty default gateway
Then there is 2 Ethernet adaptor that has numbers in all three.

Is it normal to have three of these?

Just something else to confuse you with, sorry :-/

Delete them all and reboot the machine. What happens now?

        Hi again,
Sorry to be such a ninny, but how do I delete them?
Can I do this in this MS Dos screen?  Or is there somewhere else I need to be?
I have been using computers through work for a while, and when the tech is in I watch and ask questions, but some things are still a mystery to me, I'm an oldie!   :-X

Sontrol Panel/System/Device Manager - Delete any of these that show up as checked by right clicking and choosing DELETE.

Let's talk only about the kid's broken Win98 computer OK?

How does it connect and how do you know it's connected?

(GX1_Man, promise to tell me if I start going postal?)

Make sure each computer involved has knowledge of the IP address of a DNS server.  Without that, you cannot resolve domain names to IP addresses.

Someone else might kindly explain for me - I'm tanked up on painkillers for a dodgy back, and my head is fuzzy...
