Limited Or No Connectivity
« on: November 14, 2006, 04:58:26 PM »
My family has 4 computers in total including mine. Im contemplating whether to put my computer downstairs and have it running wireless. But, the problem is everytime I try to access the wireless network is says: Limited Or No Connectivity Due to the router not assigning the computer an IP address.
Im assuming these questions will be ask so I'll answer the ones I can: Computer Specs in Sig, Linksys WRT54GS router, And my wireless card im not sure what it is because it came with the computer when I bought it. But it says 802.11g Wireless MiniPCI Card. All the computers running wireless had difficulty getting on to the network, so we had to hire someone to do it. I'd rather not hire someone because this is more of a convenience thing, then a must have.

Also, I just remembered I use Avast as an antivirus don't know if it'll help, and I have windows firewall.

i get that problem sometimes... all you have to do is resett the router..

    turn off all computers

unplug all wires from the router

there should be a lil button near the power on the router push that button in for 30 seconds. then plug everything back in and turn on all of the computers and see if there get the internet.

if you want to put the sercurity stuff back on(if you had any) i will be glad to help you do that

Simply rebooting the router by removing the power and plugging back in should take care of that. No need to reset to defaults.

Thank you for the replies. I've already tried resetting the router, and the modem, by unplugging it. Im not sure why it does this.

Is the router the same brand as your wireless network cards?

Why not try giving the wireless network cards static IP addresses?  That solves lots of problems.

No - on the network settings for each wireless card on each PC - under TCP/IP settings.

      See the networking FAQ.

1st i guess it must be my cable modem so i reset the modem but still nothing change. then i connect my laptop to the WRT54G using LAN port. i still cannot connect to internet.
then i reset the WRT54G. everything back to normal, both my pc and laptop can connect to internet.
after few hours then the problem back again. i have to reset the WRT54G few time a day.
is there is a posibble connection problem between my motorola cable modem and my WRT54G.?"

when i loose connection, the status at my linksys monitor show connected.my WRT54G look normal, just the internet activity LED blinking very slow, about 2second,  then i  ping my WRT54G, starting i get 4 or 5 request timeout, then i get 4-5 reply, then timeout again, about 4-5 time then get reply again.
after i off the router power and on back, everything back to normal. wireless and thru LAN cable also same.

        sometime i get this
"Limited or no connectivity. " at the system tray icon.totally no connection at all

The "limited or no connectivity" relates to DHCP, probably.  But the failure of the internet connection will either be a problem with your cable service, or possibly a failure of the cable modem.  See if you can try using a different cable modem.  These things are generally left switched on 24/7 and they do die, eventually.

          4 things:

          1) Are you using the linksys conection utility I have had many problem with it in the past. If so post back for more detaled instructions. DO NOT TRY TO UNISTALL. (WILL SCREW YOU UP BIGTIME)

          2) Is the signal encripted, this can degrate the signal and if your signal strength is low it can cause the rouyer not to assign an I.P. address.

          3) Did you already tey setting a stack I.P. (Make sure it is not already used.)

          4) I know linksys has 24/7 tec. support. Face it they are more fimilure with there system then we are. (You must be very relazed and rested befor doing this step.) ;) ;)

i have both my pc and laptop connect to router, my pc is thru wireless, laptop thre LAN cable.
when my linksys monitor show "you connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found." both my pc and laptop show the same thing. both can't connect to internet,
as i said b4, i power the modem and on back. still no respond.
power off the router and on back, both can connect again.

what i suspect is the router.
before that i use DHCP, now i change to static ip. still didn't solve my problem.
signal strengh between good to excellent.
            using channel 1
            wireless security = wpa2
            static ip
            pc ip=192.168.1.108
            laptop ip=192.168.1.107

the message "Limited Or No Connectivity " only show up few time when i leave my pc running in the morning and  when i come back from work after 10 hours i saw this message. it's not frequently happen. but this "you connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found" happen everyday.!
i also try use different security method, even use mac filter,  result same.
i already post this in linksys forum, http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&message.id=16070&jump=true#M16070

seem not much help. so i look for other advice from here.
            my pc spec
            P4 2.8
            1GB RAM, 512+512
            windows xp pro sp2(updated)
            internet connection : linksys wusb54XX(forgot) it's a usb wireless G adapter.
            laptop spec
            dell inspiron P3 1GHz
            xp home (updated)
            512MB

anyway, thank you everybody for your concern. Thank You!

:)Sorry it took me a day or two to get back to this issue, but here is what to do. :)

                  1. Right click on the linksys app. symbol in the system tray (bottom left hand corner) click exit (cant remember exact wording, but close the program).

                  2. Go Start> Control Panel> Classic View(On left panel)> Network Connections.

                  3. Once that is open would should see a conception called "Wireless Network Connection #" db click.

                  4. On the new box select the option "View Wireless Networks"

                  5. In the main box there should be some long lengthy error message saying basically Windows can not control the device. If this in not present skip to step 10.

                  6. On the left hand side db click "Change Advanced Settings"

                  7. Click the "Wireless Networks" tab

                  8. Check the check box net to the sentence "Use windows to ....................."

                  9. Click OK and then repeat steps 2-4

                  10. Now select the network that is yours and hit connect. PRESTO ::) (Note: You may need to add any necessary encryption code if one is set, the box will appear automatically.)

The failure to see the internet means that a gateway IP address has not been assigned (probably).  You can assign this manually.  In your case, 192.168.1.1 is probably correct.  You can also assign your primary DNS to the same address.
