Web links
« on: January 03, 2007, 09:59:52 PM »
Good Day,  Sorry to bother everyone but I haven't seen my problem in the past topics and was wondering if anyone had ever encountered it before. I have a cable internet connection and wanted to share it between our two computers.  I aquired a Netgear WGR614v4 Wireless Router with a WG111 Wireless USB Adapter. I connected my newer computer (HP Pavillion, AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 2.19 Ghz, running XP Home svc. pk. 2) directly into the Netgear router and attached the Wireless USB to my older computer (running Windows Me).  After running all the setups and doing the re-boots, I got connectivity on both computers with apparently no problems.

But, after trying to access certain web sites and clicking on buttons, I found that the base computer (the HP directly connected to the router) would not load those pages.  There is no specific pattern.  I can load my Comcast News page, but when I click on the link buttons, nothing happens. The same with my banking sites, shopping sites, etc. Even when I tried to register at this site, I had to use a different computer to do so.

Strangely, on the older computer with the wireless USB connection, I can access anything.  When I disconnect the router and run a straight internet connection to the HP computer, there is no access problem. I double checked the router, network and IE 7 settings, tried disabling the firewall and anti-virus but still encoutered the same problem.

There is probably something simple that I am overlooking but I am pounding my head against my monitor trying to figure it out.  I've talked with "Netgear" and the MS people, but each expert blames the other equipment without defining the problem. I am not a networking guru, but I am fairly savy with computers.  Has anyone encountered this problem before?

IE7 might be the problem (some more MS junk). Try a different browser and see what happens.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

Thanks for the advice.  I did try that, using Firefox and Opera but I still get the same results.  Sorry I didn't mention that in my original email (I upgraded to IE 7 hoping that might solve it, but no change there either).  Do you think it could be the router?  That was one of my guesses, but I can't figure out why the wireless would work, but not the direct connection to the router.

Could you give us the output of ipconfig /all for both computers?

That's brilliant, thank you.  The good news is that your configuration appears to be correct.  The bad news is that it doesn't work...

This cable modem - is there an ethernet connection from the cable modem to the router?  What firewalls are involved?

Again, thank you for wading through all that data.  My internet connection is as follows:

Cable connection to the cable modem (provided by Comcast, Arris model #TM402P/110). RJ45 cable from the modem to the Netgear router, RJ45 cable from the router to the Ethernet card on the HP Computer.

When I run without the router (as I am now), it's just a RJ45 cable from the modem directly to the ethernet card.

The modem does have a USB connection, but of course there isn't one on the router.

As for firewalls, I use Norton Internet Security on the HP computer for my firewall, and disable Window XP Firewall. I have tried disabling the Norton Internet Security but it did not correct the connectivity problem.

On the older computer I use Zone Alarm (free version).

Sorry - I've been offline for a couple of days.

All right, lets drill down to some specific problems.  Can you give me a link to a page where you are experiencing problems?  Off the top of my head it sounds like it might be a problem with SSL-secured sites, but lets look at this more closely.

    Ta!

    Thank you for your response,

I will have to go off-line and reconnect the offending router later, but some sites immediately come to mind:

Going to www.comcast.net (my home page), it will not allow me to open up the scrolling "flash" links in the headlines section of the screen (thing like news, videos, sport in the center, top area)

Another problem I found is when going to www.demonoid.com (a bit torrent site) it will allow me to click on the torrent section and bring that up.  But when I enter a search and click on the "apply filters" button, nothing happens.

I can go to www.amazon.com and enter information to search, but when I hit the "search" button, nothing happens.

Lastly when going to my banking site, www.navyfcu.org, I can successfully log in, view accounts and other things.  But when I went to transfer fund and clicked the "submit" button, again nothing happened.

I can usually open up most sites that I go to. It's when I'm clcking buttons (Search, apply, submit, etc) is when it doesn't connect.

This does not appear to be connected to your hardware problems - it may just be coincidental.  The first problem would probably be resolved by downloading the latest version of the Flash plugin from Adobe.

Check that you don't have javascript disabled, and that your internet security settings aren't unnecessarily restrictive.

    Dear Sir,

Well, I checked everything.  Java is set up and enabled. I double-checked my version of Adobe Flash, and my Internet Security is set to Medium.

Now, I can't even get the network to connect.  The Network Settings say I have a Local Connection but the Network is disabled and I can connect on any computer through the router.

Frankly, I'm ready to pick up an axe and destroy this router.  If I were to go out and get a different wireless network system, is there any vendor you would recommend?  Obviously someone with a better costumer service department than Netgear. I need something which is not going to cause my brain to hemorrage, and my ears to bleed.

Oops, typo in that second paragraph.

What I meant was I "Cannot" connect to the internet through the router on either of my computers.  Completely deadsville.

Try Linksys or Xyxel.  I wonder if anyone else could get that Netgear working...  Maybe it's fragged.
