force a logon to MShome/Workgroup
« on: January 21, 2007, 08:14:33 PM »
I like to force a "Classic Logon?" to MShome/Workgroup, as I think it is not a bad way of stopping Peekers on my Lan, e.g. neighbours or Driveby's eventhough it may not be perfect.

Here is my set-up:
U.S. Robotics Router, seems to be well protected, according to various tests.
-local computers:
--Mshome:
   ---Heinz57 XP, Hardwired into Router
   ---Compaq XP, Wireless
---Xstore W2000, Hardwired into Router, user must login
--Workgroup:
---Sheeba XP, Wireless, user must login

I can access any of my computers, provided I login as required, e.i. Xstore or Sheeba.

What I want to do is force a Login for the Heinz57 and Compaq.
I searched just about all subjects in the PC's Help and Internet to do this type of thing, but running out.

I appreciate your help. Thank you.

What do you mean by "force a logon"?  Which version of XP is it - Home or Pro?  XP Pro's security isn't fab, but XP Home's sucks royally.

Thank you for your reply.

I should have mentioned this.
XP is HomeEdition for all three, including Sheeba, and that one pops up with:

if accessed from XPhome:
--"Connect to Sheeba" screen,
"username:" greyed and displays "Sheeba\guest" greyed
    and requests a password

 if accessed from 2000:
--"Enter Network Password" screen,  for "\\Sheeba" and it wants
  "Connect As:"
  "Password:"

As I kept on searching, it appears XPhome has a big hole in security. However Sheeba runs under XPhome but does not allow access, unless you Login, and that is where I am looking for, for the Heinz57 and Xstore.
I should mention that the Sheeba is my daughter's Wireless laptop, and the access method was confiqured by the University, which she no longer attends. Thus it will be hard to get the "recipe".

XP Home automatically sends the username and password of the currently logged in user.  If you have the same username and password on all machines, you should find that shares work seamlessly. Not a great alternative to the higher security of a real domain controller, but then if you're stuck with XP Home, you don't have much other choice.
