computer won't boot
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:04:59 PM »
Hi to all                                                                                                c
MY first post to this forum and hopefully it wont be a drag.
my system is
winxp service pack 2
asus p4p800e deluxe mobo
2 gig ddr ram
psu tk930 p4 300 watt
geforce 6400 agpx8 a28 mb ram hdtv + dvi + tv out
sound blaster audigy 2 zs
2 sata seagate 120 gig , 80 gig
dvd rom
dvd burner dual layer
floppy drive  (of course)
19 " diamond view monitor
epsom stylus photo r310 printer
cannon lide scanner
netgear wireless internet
belken cordless mose
logitec cordlesss k/b

my problem is I cleaned out a years worth of accumulated dust and when I tried to fire it up again the it kept turning itself of. Activity was limited to lights on dvd's flashing then power would go off. There was no burning smell. Power light on the mother board is on and in the green. I probably have fritzed the m/b but would like some knowleable input before buying a new one.

check every connection on motherboard, RAM , graphic card, everything, make sure everything proper seated, if possible remove and re-seat again. make sure touch the PSU and casing to remove static charge before you touch the things on the motherboard. off the power and disconnect the power cable to PSU .

      hope you didn't fried anything...
disconnect all IDE and SATA connection to motherboard, take out sound card and other PCI device, leave only 1 pc of RAM on the slot near to CPU, graphic card, no hard drive. power on, then anything change?
      Good Luck

I had a computer that did something like that (actually i had 2)
One didn't start at all (CPU was fried) and the other started but just sat there (mobo was fried) And yet another that crashed every 5 seconds making it impossible to do anything at all.(RAM was fried). Be careful not to fry anything.
          System Specs:
          AMD Athlon 64 3200+
          1024MB DDR400
          GeForce 7600GS
          160GB SATA II
          500-watt PSU

How did you clean it out? Just blow it out with air or disassemble it? An intel processor will shut down if the CPU Fan is not correctly applied and it overheats without damaging the processor. I would recheck the build first IF you did in fact disassemble it.

A 300 watt PSU is not very much for all of that, by the way.  ;)

um check all the connection if it is connected properly if you disassembled it check memory, vc, sound card if it is seated properly in the slot cause if it not placed properly there will be a tendecy to get it burned

          hi back again
          to answer a few questions
1 I used an air can to blow it out and a soft brush to to get out fluff that was stuck to high points.
2 reseting the rtc by resetting the jumpers.
3 and removed and replaced the cmos batteries
same deal lights on to cd drives then power goes off.
power to mobo is present according to led on mobo.
then I did the rebuild from scratch as asked earlier
with one ram stick and all other parts removed or disconnected, same thing applied, lights, no bells or whistles (no beeps)
thats where it now sits in bits, waiting for resuscitation.
just been checking the cpu heatsink and fan and the cradle has a crack in the side arm and ait does not sit securely over the cpu, abit loose with 1 to 2 mm of sideways movement. and now the fan on the heatsink does not spin up.

This is the problem. Replace that fan/heatsink cradle with a new one...

          HI
New set of problems no power going to any points on the mobo now no fans no lights . I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to a techie. will  probably need a new power supply now, and cpu . As a gamer I'm thinking about asus striker extreme coupled with a quad 4 775 cpu (qx6700)as long as no other parts a affected it will set me back just over 2000 bucks (Aust)

thanks for your help to this point

Obviously money is no object here, so take it to the tech.  ;)
