Why oh why did i go to sky
« on: April 03, 2007, 12:00:55 PM »
I'm at my wits end ever since i changed to Sky BB I've had connection problems. I can see a little light at the end of the proverbial tunnel but need help to make it brighter. I shall attempt to explain my prob. I have a single PC connected v ethernet cable to a netgear router supplied by sky. My problem is that i keep loosing my search function with a p2p service i use often. At first i thought i sussed the prob as it was something to do with upnp not being set up...so this i did and it worked for a limited time...sometimes an hour sometimes several. What ive noticed is that one of two of the little icons disapears (little computer bottom right corner) and this sems to coinside with me loosing connection with the p2p or part of the facilities anyway. One of the icons is network connection (this never goes off an is always connected at 100mbps. The one that disapears on me is the Internet connection. Ive tried going into the properties of this but am denied accsess saying that it is not config to allow netwrk users control or change the settings. But I'm not on a network !!..i'm sure this is part of the prob..but Im all out of ideas... Dunno if this means anything, but when with AOL and wa connected with there DSL I didnt have any of these probs and was always connected 24/7 unlike nowdays....... Any help most appreciated..Ta.. in advance

Can you provide a screenshot of that icon, and the context menu that pops up when you right-click on it?

Hi Rob, I dont know how to apply a screen shot, but the icon is simply two little computers, one slightly behind the other. When you hover the curser over, the information states " Internet Connection. Status:Connected" if you right click the following options are advertised: Disable, Status, Change Windows Firewall settings, Open network connections.

Thx...

Hi Chris,,,The name of the p2p is DC++ . The test tool i use to check if the unpn is working is from http://www.junegillespie.plus.com/UPnPTest.exe.

I have pasted the resuls from the test below...I get these results when one of my network icons disapears.

If i unplug the power to the router for a moment the local area connection icon is shown with a cross through and informs me a network cable is unplugged. After a couple of moments the icon named "internet connection reapears" and after a 2/3 min wait the results show all passes...Ive put these underneath the fail results.

ive been having similiar problems and sky customer services is really pathetic ,i hope u get it sorted

my problem is my sky router loses connection intermittently or as often as every 15-19 minutes ,ive changed sky's router for my own and i'm still having problems ,so i'm headbanging the wall ,if anyone knows whats up can they pm me

diver if u need sky's router codes to try another router i'll gladly send them you ,,

like u say "why oh why did i join sky "

lets hope a sky manager sees this and offers us free access as a way of compensation ;)

Hi Lazyhazy... I had the same prob when i first joined sky an after numerous phonecalls i finally got an tech'y person that actually knew what a pc was !!. THEY CHANGED ME FROM 16MB TO 8 Which at the time seemed to resolve that problem only leaving me with the one I'm experiencing now...Thx for the offer of the codes..but already have...I sign in a sky admin...lol. Honestly though I have rang them more than 30 times (each time paying a premium rate dont forget) they always say that someone from a higher it skill will call back within 5 days...never recieved a call in three months..Ive now stopped my direct debit in the hope they will call me and I can send 10,ooo volts through the phone line..haha...wish i could....Good Luck with your prob....dont hold breath for them to resolve though

Judging by all that has been said in this thread, I would say the most likely source of the problem is the Sky connection.  I suggest trying a different P2P service or client program.  It may be that Sky's routers are overloaded but that trying something different will have better results.

Maybe your router needs a firmware upgrade. Some modern routers seem to have trouble with P2P networking as did my Linksys WRT45GEU which kept resetting the connection upon BitTorrent activity..
