How do you test a defragmentation tool?

It'd be nice if you could conjure up a report on which tool is more effective.. But how do you fragment a hard drive for benchmarking?

Just running Windows normally for a few weeks without any housekeeping seems to do the trick... ;D ;D

well i've always noticed that only one disk defrag program i have ever used ever worked right (Norton Disk Defragmenter 2.1.4 for System 7 altho it wasent compadible with MacOS Exctended partitions), that is that it placed all the data ALL the data at the begining of the drive organized from least used to most recently used whereas Windows Defrag just leaves the data in chunks ALL over the disk whever it happend to come together and i dont perticularly care for that

I thought Linux (Isn't Mac OS partially Linux?) do not need defragmenting.

I believe you're correct. To my understanding unless the hard disk drive is packed the way *nix handles it's file structure allows it to not require defragmenting.

I dont believe that the base system has any part of Linux, but it does use Unix... (as far as I am concerned, there is a difference)
