What kind of certificates do you have?
« on: April 28, 2007, 07:19:31 AM »
I'm curious as to the amount of 'official' experts there are on this forum, what kind of PC certificates do you have?

I think I have a CCNA 1 certificate and I also have an ECDL certificate for all 7 modules. Well, all 6 actually, because I failed the MS Access test with 5% but I intend on correcting that somewhere in the near future.

we started making the maps and models with radiant(one of the editors used for half life/doom/etc.) and i'm not so sure with the programming and stuff lol, because i just make the storylines, maps, models, and particle systems. Most of the game's construction is done via a network (cos we're lazy:P)

The lowest level of oil rig/platform hierarchy. Involved in cleaning and crane operations. I also have next step Roughneck, Assistant Driller, Subsea and Bargeman certificates. You should walk through these stages up to Drilling Engineer. :)

It is! They pay well, but want minimum 12 hours day work and extreme caution about your life. :)
Have not you seen Simpsons, where Homer goes as a worker to Oil Rig when he wants to suicide. ;D
It is a high risk job, but there are many procedures and rules in place to prevent. Our platforms have 4-5 years of non incident records. ;)

About Microsoft Certification program I can say that it is useful and it is hard, i.e., became harder in last 2 or 3 years.

Some of the Microsoft training programs are quite expensive.  I know a guy who is a computer support person and trainer at a major multi-city law firm.  He was considering a Microsoft training program taught right here in Columbus, Ohio; Microsoft has a training center here.

IIRC, the program ran for 6 months and was taught is a classroom setting. The cost of the program was $25,000.  Yeah, $25K!  He applied and was accepted but then decided not to go through with it.

I don't know the exact certification(s) that he would have received by completing this program.

Looks nice on a letterhead and business card.  ;)

Actually, it hasn't done much except expose me to a lot of information that otherwise I wouldn't know.  It's not a "silver bullet" to magically get you a job as I was 8 months out of work WITH the cert. and couldn't find work, so I started my own business.

The 2000 course covered Windows 2000 Server and Professional.  Helped me to look into the nooks and crannies of both to get a better understanding.  The price was right (Techskills.com) at the time and I feel more confident for taking it.

Most of the stuff I do is get people who shouldn't have a computer up and running.  Every not-and-again I tap into what the course taught to either set up or figure out a networking problem.

In the long run I'm really glad I took the course as I can sit down at a 2000 or 2003 server and get around in it without looking like a real dufus  :P

Still have a lot to learn but I've got my foot in the door  ;)

Yeah, GX1_Man, had some real head-bangers out there  :P

At the time, 2001, the course was $5K.  I had checked into other schools and they (they being Heald, ITT Tech, etc.) were anywhere from $10-to-$25K.  I couldn't afford them so I went to Techskills in Sacramento.  It was a home study course with access to teachers and a classroom with a lab.

Glad I did it and as you know we are are all in ..."continuing education".  ;D

None, yet, my "certified" former employer knew less than i did, and he has been in the business of computers for thirteen years.. Tis a sad world we live in.. My former boss even was stupid enough to believe that using a stock intel fan and heatsink would be adequate for a pentium four 3.4ghz prescott with NO CASE FANS. of course, they got well over 70c, i told him and told him that was not good, that they should not idle above about 45 - 50c or you risk burnout, he didnt listen.. 'Till one blew its guts out from overheating while installing XP pro.. Scared the crap out of him, he was sitting there waiting for it to finish configuring, then, the CPU fried. However, i have failed to convince him that the ATI HyperMemory video cards are anything more than junk. I eventually quit the job for several reasons, the first reason was his incompetence, and utter stupidity, the second was when the craptastic offbrand PSU's that came with the cases blew out he blamed me, and the third, was that he wanted me to sign off on a computer that i did not assemble, which, he had repeatedly told me NOT to do. If he cant follow his own stupid guidelines, i dont see him as a competent employer, or person for that matter.

Just A+ here.  :-[ However, I believe that certification for the most part is over rated. I've read many of the books for MCSE and CNA but never went in for testing. Unless you're actually planning on getting a job where it's required I think getting a certification is going to get lost for most people. Seems that if you don't use it you loose it. ;)
