I wouldn't call it crap unless you're a heavy gamer.  Really, I would say just increasing the amount of RAM and installing on add-on video card makes that a decent system for many purposes.

What is the PC used for?
A PC that is complete and utter rubbish for, say, gaming, could be perfect for office tasks.
Your PC is OK for web browsing, office tasks, playing old/bad graphics games, and so on.
For anything intensive, it's not great.
It needs graphics and more RAM mainly.
A new CPU may be appropriate for some tasks, but that may necessitate a new motherboard, as may a graphics card.

So what was the point of this post? Are you seeking reassurance? Agreement?

This rig is only about good for web surfing and word processing :'(.

I saw a cheap rig for <300$ on slickdeals yesterday. It was an HP with a Pent D 805 with 1gig mem, 200g hd, with onboard A/V.  What do you want to do with your rig?

This is a bit of an exaggeration.  I pulled one of my 256MB modules to bring my system down to 256MB.  I have Outlook Express, Firefox, Word, Excel, and Adobe Reader open, and I'm not really noticing much degradation in performance.  Now, granted, I have an AGP video card w/128MB.

But, still, I find your comment an exaggeration.   As I said in a previous post, one or two upgrades, meaning RAM and/or a video card, will make that system quite good for many tasks and some fairly heavy multiple tasking.
