    Cord.wav sound in Vista ( annoying )
    « on: May 14, 2007, 07:56:02 AM »
    I'm new to Vista.
My friend has a few month old HP Media Center PC m7757c with an E6400 Core 2 Duo / 2048 RAM / 400 GB HD / NVIDIA GeForce 7500LE video card and it's running Vista (pro?)

This computer is hooked up to comcast high speed internet via a D-Link modem and a D-Link G wireless router.

He has two browsers: IE7 and Firefox 5. Firefox has a Google menu bar below the main menu bar. IE has at least 5 menu bars beneath the main address bar: and HP menu bar, a Google menu bar, a coupons menu bar, a Comcast menu bar, and a Norton menu bar. Mostly while using the IE browser but also with the Firefox and indeed with no browser open, this computer keeps making that annoying cord.wav sound which according to the the information I found by accessing "sounds" from the speaker icon in the task bar, this sound is associated with "Close program". Besides being annoying when I started the computer this morning I got a message for a critical update and one for an Apple program which "changes the default color settings of Windows". The critical update would not download and if there was a change in colors I certainly did not notice it.

My friend swears that all of these sub menu bars came with the computer out of the box. I have a feeling that he has downloaded programs that may be in conflict with each other.
Any feedback for me on this?

Also, I can not seem to find "Windows Explorer" on Vista. Has MS change the name or eliminated it?

Sounds pretty fishy to me.  Firefox doesn't come with the Google toolbar and IE7 does definitely not come with 5 toolbars.  Have you run any antivirus or antispyware scans?

No, Windoze hasn't changed or eliminated IE...sure wish they did though  :P

I haven't run any anti virus or spy ware program on his computer. I will ask him to do it so I'm not responsible for doing anything beside checking my email and asking questions in the forum. I've looked over his shoulder as he's working on the internet and he becomes fascinated by the hype of a program. This man has more things that he never uses than anyone I know!

BTW I was not asking about IE is was asking about Windows Explorer that appeared in 95-XP as a folder with a magnifying glass in front of it. It allowed you to look in drives, folders, and "My Computer" which also seems to be missing in Vista; shortened perhaps to "Computer"

        This <cord.wav> sound is troubling!

Just out of curiousity,  try    WindowsKey+E   .    What happens?

It works on '98,  and I think it works on XP .... shortcut to launch Explorer.
I use it all the time.

        It is mentioned here too:
        http://www.computerhope.com/shortcut.htm

Let us know if it works on Vista too.

Computer window pops up. Kinda like Windows Explorer but a little different.

Here's a video you might want to watch...Explorer is still there in Vista and more powerful than before...just a tad bit different but you can customise it to your needs....

I can't play the video - -    so is WinKey+E     Explorer or something different now  ?

The video in essence says that WinKey+E is "Explorer". In Vista they purposely stay away from the name "Window Explorer" or "Explorer" for short because the new search goes about searching in a much more complex way. They use the word Shell. But after all that explaining in the video I discovered a way to find "Windows Explorer" and add it to your start menu: In "Start Search" type: "shell"  "Windows Explorer" appears, right click and choose "Add to start menu" or "Add to Quick Launch" and there it is!

The Video real goes into depth!
