Before you dis Vista
« on: June 07, 2007, 06:13:13 PM »
Try it out for a week
And if your still not convinced that its featurful enough, try it out for a month.

I found SO many useful things just hidden around.

Also, keep in mind:
That nice computer that you just bough that came with Vista, probably isnt compatible with XP...

Upgrade of Vista does not include the uninstall feature
to go back to XP as if the bad dream never happened.

Another screw-up by 'Uncle Billy and his faithful
staff.

But, really folks Microsoft has helped the world a lot
with their great products.

I'm presently using XP and real glad to have it.

Zylstra if my crippled old 1999 model Gateway E-4200
ever quits.... me and Vista have a meeting then.

This is not true a computer that has Vista pre-installed is definitely compatible with XP.

Vista requires more than XP. Therefor XP would work PERFECTLY on a Vista Computer.

That's not always true.I had a compaq that xp would not install on unless
I left out the add-on sound card, installed xp then put the card back in,
After xp was installed.then all was fine.

After setting up my sister's new laptop that has Vista on it for printing and file sharing over our LAN, lets just say I am not happy. I may be new to the system and so I don't know it well like I do XP, but it sure was hard to find settings. Some things like the run option on the start menu are off by default while others like the ridiculous security are on. The security is enough to make anyone crazy. It literally asks for confirmation on everything you do. It runs extremely slow on a computer that was Vista ready. More like ready to upgrade and spend more money just to use a new system that is still far from being error free. I know I won't be getting the Vista upgrade for the HP desktop we got back in February for sure. XP is good enough for me and is much more compatible with my software.

    No always.
Your Chipset, audio, video, and other hardware may not have drivers for Windows XP, and XP may not have the correct generic drivers.

Windows Vista was designed to be for anyone. (But obviously not for you...)
Its user interface, and options layout was meant to make it so that a regular user can figure it out on their own.

I have to admit, I was never able to make Vista access my Epson printer on our makeshift network, but then again, I dont really print all that often... (Its the Windows XP computer that is denying access, so maybe someday I will get it)

As for the security, you can disable it.
(Its no worse than SUDO in Linux...)

My only regret is that I did not do a complete reformat when I got the computer. Dell loaded a whole log of junk on it, but it was not hard to remove, and hey, now I have Jepordy on my computer  ;D

I have a hard time believing that any hardware manufacturer that has Vista driver support would not also have XP support. XP is still dominating the market with computers it's installed on. It would be suicide to not have XP driver at this point in time. Maybe in the future this would change.

If I'm wrong could you give examples of hardware that is not XP compatible?

The only *one* thing I can think of at this time that is not XP compliant/compatible is Halo, which was designed for Vista, but coming from Microsoft and the success they had with Halo on the 360 I can see why they would so something like this, and it's not going to be suicide for them. Although I'd assume the sales of the game are going to be very low.

It's just a silly broad statement that has no truth to it...

List a piece of hardware here that has Vista Only drivers for it.

    I won't hold my breath.

Yeah. You can just go to command prompt and type
    Code: [Select]
    telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl
Or you can create a shortcut to telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

Or you can paste telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl into a blank text document and save it as a batch file

Sorry for the delayed response, I have not been checking my email.

A few weeks ago, I would have believed that any computer would keep it possible to downgrade to XP without any problems, until a CH member posted a topic about it.

He claimed that he was unable to run XP correctly, since some of the hardware in his computer did not have an XP driver.

Most manufacture OEM's will not supply a full list of compatible drivers available for all operating systems. (since they are cheap and stuck up)
If you go to the manufacturer of the hardware itself, a lot of the times, they will not help you with getting the compatible driver, since the OEM has in their contract that all support be directed to them. (Yes, I happen to be talking about the jerks down at Dell)

Now, this does not mean that its impossible to get it to work, but it does not mean that its compatible.
