Port Forwarding
« on: June 21, 2007, 11:18:03 AM »
I am trying to set up port forwarding for Azureus (torrent program). I am using a US Robotics USR8054 router. I followed these instructions: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/USRobotics/USR8054/Azureus.htm. It still won't work. I tried connecting directly to my modem (without the router) and found that my security software was blocking the ports. I fixed that. Now the ports work without the router but with it they still wont work. I have checked like 5 times to see if i made some kind of error in the router settings but everything is exactly like what portforward.com says it should be.

If you are sure that your router settings are correct, then you may be having a firewall problem.
Try this - turn off your firewall and run Azureus again.

Are you sure that you even need port forwarding?
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

It's not required for the program to run but it increases download and upload speed significantly. I've tried google but everyone's problems are much simpler like "whats port forwarding?" or "I did this and it still doesn't work" and the next person tells them that they did it all wrong.

Test by downloading a known torrent that is supplied by many fast connections.

For example,  try downloading ubuntu linux.

Did you get a much better speed?

In the status column where it might say downloading, paused, etc. it says queued, which means I am in line to download the file.

Right - I know what it means.

But why do you have it queued?    I thought you wanted to test download speed.    If you do,  then stop other downloads, and start the ubuntu download.

Sorry, I never realized that I could only download 2 at a time. The speed on this is about 200-300 kB/s. When I download something from the internet on a good server it goes at about 500 kB/s.

That number is probably configurable by you, somewhere in your software.

Earlier you were concerned that something was wrong on your end,  as your  speed was 15 kb/sec.

So you have now discovered that all is ok,  right?

    huh?
That was the purpose of this experiment...  to download from known good servers.     ubuntu linux is usually available from a couple hundred servers at once,   so download speeds might be up to almost whatever the limit is that is imposed by your isp.

What download rate are you paying for?    In other words,  what is the max speed that your isp is supposed to provide you?

And have you tried an online speed test?
    Try this:   http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Try a couple different servers.   Be sure nothing else is downloading when you do the tests.
After you do a test,  it will report the results towards the bottom of the screen,  both in   kbps  and KB/s.     Copy and paste everything there back here.
