An Idea...
« on: June 25, 2007, 03:20:51 AM »
For Computer Hope: A link somewhere on the site (both while posting and on boards) to Google, and/or a Google bar where members can search stuff in (see the below pic)

I would just like to see what you think; this would benefit many newbies as well as members: newbies so that they can search their question, and sometimes instantly get answers; and members so they don't have to answer something so easy that it could be Googled (i.e. What is a cookie?)

haha lol what is a cookie.. i remember that... good idea tho.. i was going to mention something like that, but i don't find it necessary because lots of people have google on their firefox toolbar (if they have firefox), but it could be pretty useful to those n00b$ who don't bother searching or asking their pet hamster... or in some cases, woodpecker... and instead end up asking things like ''where does the fork go in relation to my power socket?''

If they can't be bothered to search in the first place, this won't encourage them.
That's the sad truth.

It is a good idea but As well IE7 as FireFox 2.0 has a search bar.
but this will forcomm newbies asking stupid questions.
although there will always be some mentarded noobs how will still ask those question its just unstoppable but this is an idea how we can forcomm those stupid questions.
Lets see what the moderators think about it.

Devoted user for around 2 years or more, go Firefox!
I know what you mean now, at first I thought you meant the Google toolbar, which people should avoid.
But you mean the searchbar in the top right, I think.
    My bad.
To be honest, I rarely use that though.

At least it's easier than opening Google, but, alas, you are right. But it could at least help some of us.

I've got a Google Search Toolbar and a Windows Live Search Toolbar in my IE, but I never use them (they've been there for so long, I just don't notice them). A search bar that is directly in the LOS of the reader/poster would gte more attention, so it might work better than the above toolbars.

While it's true that almost any question can be found through Google, many can also be answered through the Computer Hope site and forum search as well. Many new users also have a hard time sometimes interpreting search results or in some cases get sites with crap advice or hard to understand advice.

Really I don't think it's that hard to help someone by simply providing a link to a site for them or give them a quick simple response.

So very true.  Each a good point.

      I agree.

Edit that to "quick, simple, and courteous response"  and it would be a worthy motto.

All are good points, but it would be good if some people Googled for simple things (i.e. What is a cookie?), as well as things about homework and tests (some of the homework questions can be found in 20 seconds, and the person is meant to do the homework themselves).

Good observation; yes, that GoogleBar is from Not Pron, but I haven't played recently (I'll start on the holidays), that was the only site I remembered that had a bar like that.
