It mostly depends on where you are downloading from.  You may have a good connection, but the server might not be able to push it out as fast as you can get it.

Try downloading from another source, or a mirror.  See if that helps.

Yh i know sometimes depending on where the sever is in the world and how bad the upload ratio is of the file itself can be bad towards your download .... but the only mirrors i found where in the states :(

well i think the problems solved it must be the mirrors , i download a few fair games of american sites as the games i download are infact americain and they dont seem to have any europe mirrors ...... so when im downloading frm the states im taking it as im getting the slower download as the untied states mirror is for the untied states and there at high depeteny to use it 1st and fast...

Wow, you've got a terribly wide variation there.

The real question in these speed tests is how your speed compares to what speed your ISP says their Internet service will provide.  I ran the speed test from http://www.speedtest.net/ and got this:

That's not as good as what I normally get the test site I normally use from dslreports.com.  With the dslreports.com testing site, I usually get around 1440 kbps down and 380 up (it's usually fairly consistent between tests).  That's actually good, since my DSL service is rated at 1500 kbps/384 kbps.  I can get faster DSL if I want to pay more.

hehe.. well i actually live in Brisbane, and my connection FROM Brisbane to Brisbane is usually around the 2400 Kb/s mark, with uploading at 800, but i don't get how silent assasin's connection is so *censored* good. are you using NASA as an ISP or something?

Oh boy.   ::)  And, what did I say about ISP rated speed, etc?  I could easily get a faster speed than you're getting if I decided to pay more for faster speed.

What about the other point I mentioned.  DSL speed is affected by distance from the nearest major relay point/station of the telecommunications provider.  I'm getting about 96% (1440/1500) of the rated download speed, and that's good.  What are you getting?

Also, I'd rather get a consistent 1440 kbps than a service that sometimes gives me 1817 kbps but then may be a low as 196 kbps at other times, especially if the frequency of slower speeds is rather common.

heh... i don't care what this connection is, or whether it's consistent or not... i'll be going back home to my consistent 2400 in 3 weeks  :-X

actually... come to think of it... 3 weeks.. please stay consistent... lol
but btw, did you also notice that the first one was a lot closer than the second one? i think this is consistent, but just sucks over long distances.

Im thinking off changeing to aol soon as my contract with tiscali is up.... :)

reaper_tbs, I got mixed up on who had posted the two widely differing test results, since Richenstony included your test results in a quotation.  Yep, you're the one with the inconsistent tests, not Richenstony.

Have you tried running tests over a number of days to see whether there's a pattern, such as better speeds at certain times of the day?

COL.  I grew up on a dairy farm.  Apparently, you're not really far from an city or town.  My brother farms; neither DSL or cable is available there.  They're stuck with dialup.

Personally, I'd avoid AOL.  But, if you really think it will work better for you, it's up to you.

Well, it depends on one's region, really.  Broadband is a lot cheaper in some areas.  In my area, however, that is not the case.  I currently pay US$10 for AOL...upgrading to broadband would be about US$45 ($5 cheaper than it was several months ago).

My actual speed is 8mb/1700kb.  Woot.  ;D
