connect 2 comps to wifi
« on: August 09, 2007, 01:59:38 AM »
I was wondering if its possible to connect my Desktop computer to Laptop computers wifi connection.
My laptop has a much stronger wifi card. Is there anyway i can connect an ethernet cord to the both comps and access the internet on my desktop from my laptop?
Any ideas or help would be useful, thanks in advance,

You can do that but you will need a cross cable to connect them or a router in between both computers.
But I suggest a cross cable.
Then go to (on the laptop) start -> connect to -> wireless connections -> properties -> advanced -> allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection.
But then both computers must be in the same network.
    Are they?

Its looks the same like a straight Ethernet cable but inside the cable the wires are twisted like this:

I know it is very unsafe to have a network in a public wifi.
Let me look in to this and figure out if there is a way to protect a network when in the same SSID(public wifi in this case).

Alright I did some research and found out that you can't protect your workgroup.
but then you have to protect both computers from entering and ...
Well if they can enter your workgroup but CAN'T enter your computer they are almost nothing with your workgroup.
Here is how to protect the computer: (Very easy) Just make sure that there isn't a user without PW.
But that means if you're now logging in to your computer without having to give a PW or anything. That would change you will have to enter you're PW each time you boot you're computer.
I think you don't want to share folders on the workgroup do you?
Than you should block printer and file sharing in you're firewall.
BTW: the destkop is yours wright?

yeah, i blocked the folder and printer sharing, and yes the desktop is mine. my laptop and desktop are sitting back to back.

So you're sure all windows accounts are PW protected?
Ok here is how to create a workgroup.
Click the winkey + pause break
          click computername
Click network ID and click next
Click this computer is part of a buisness network and click next
Click my company uses a network WITHOUT a domain. Click next
Give the workgroup a special name and click next
Click finish and restart the computer.
          Do this on both computers

I told you how to configure the host computer but I forgot the client computer the desktop in your case.

To configure the client computer to use the shared Internet connection, follow these steps:
            1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
            2. Click Network and Internet Connections.
            3. Click Internet Options.
            4. In the Internet Properties dialog box, click the Connections tab.
            5. Click the Setup button.

            The New Connection Wizard starts.
            6. On the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard page, click Next.
            7. Click Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.
            8. Click Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
            9. Click Connect using a broadband connection that is always on, and then click Next.
            10. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard page, click Finish

Let me know if it worked.
