Dell Dimension 2100 will not turn on

Hello all I have a problem with a computer a friend gave me. He gave me the Dell Dimension 2100 and when I got it, it worked but I only had a small hard drive around so I installed windows 98 on the hard drive and my plan was to get a larger hard drive and install XP on it. So I got the hard drive and installed it into the computer and since I had to go to school I asked my brother to install xp. after school he told me that the computer turned on showed some "dos stuff" and then wouldn't turn on. Now the computer will not turn on but you can hear the power supply fan, and the lights are lighted on the motherboard and network card.

Maybe your video card or monitor stopped working then. Make sure the card wasnt knocked loose during the HD installation and just for fun, make sure the monitor is still plugged in. Thats the kind of mistake I would make.

The monitor still works because im using it right now, and the video card is firmly in place so I doubt anything happened to it. Thank you for the response though. I did try another power supply in the computer and I get the same results as before.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, he used an XP Pro Cd that has SP2 built into it is that what you mean?

What i mean is was it a manufacturer's CD such as Dell, HP or is it a MS XP CD ? ?

A  Microsoft XP cd.

You should be able to boot up with that CD in and start the setup process all over again.
The choices should be Install; Repair or Recovery Console...choose install and select a clean install which will wipe the drive you are installing to.

But the problem is the computer wont turn on. Right now the computer won't turn on so I can't try the XP disk again. I've tried a new power supply and IDE Cables and it still doesn't work.

Do you mean it won't even POST ? ?
Is there any screen at attempting to start ?
Any beeps ?
If no then something is hooked up incorrectly...try retracing your steps.
