network speed

I've setup a 256mbps wireless network, yet, the computer only work at a max speed of 45mbps. Is this the usual speed? I know overhead takes up some of the bandwidth but seriously..even when only 1 laptop is connected, the network seems slow..i dont know what to do! i check my network card and seems to work correctly
In addition, the router is just on the other side of the wall and I use the laptop by the router too.

have you tryed right clicking on you conecction and going repair, and if you could get your hands on another network card and try it out you should...

256 Mbps WIRELESS network? Are you sure? It is not 110 Mbps (the 802.11n standard)? Or 54 Mbps (the 802.11g standrd)?

how can i check that my network card are up to more than 54 mbps?

What model are your wireless network card, router/access point, other wireless network cards in your network? (it is written on them).
