java errors

Hi
I'm having problem with Java. I keep having to download it and then it works for a while but when I turn of the comp (winXP) and reboot it it wont work again and doesnt appear on the bottom tray. Usual complaint that comes up is No Java Environment when I try use it. Can Java contain errors, viruses?  What can a man do?

I went to that site u mentioned. It does not detect Java in the pink rectangle as it should eventhough I re-installed it few hours ago. I also tried the about:plugins method and got the following:

'several java virtual machines running in the same process caused an error'

What Windows version?
Did you try to uninstall all Java instances in Add\Remove, and install fresh version?
What browser(s) are you using?
How is your security status?

 Having much the same problem here, have removed and added fresh copy multiple times on winXP as well. Still have same errors "java runtime environment cannot be loaded" and "several virtual machines running in the same process caused an error"
 Tester on recommended site apparently did not work for me either....

 Running McAfee security center anti virus and firewall, have been for several years, problem is recent development in my situation. Had absolutely no problems for about 18 mo or so with same machine and set up. Lost for clues what to try next...

Does it happen when you're using Internet Explorer only?

The RAM of my desktop is 1024MB. I tried various Java Runtime Parameter
settings, -768, -512, -500, -300, -256 and -128. All did not work. By setting
it to -16m as you did, now Java can load on IE7 alright

Don't forget to put -Xmx in front of that number.

I'd also download, and install Firefox to see if same thing will happen there.

 1 last question if you don't mind, I have .99GB of RAM, what is the value I should start with. I am not sure of the MB to GB value translations.

It's listed as .99GB=990MB, so most likely, you have 1024MB. Start with 512MB.

Seems to work so far. I change the numbers if I need in Java Runtime Parametres as you mentioned. At least it can help. Let's hope that's the only problem with Java. I also uninstalled an earlier version and reinstalled latest.

 Broni,
   I got my pages to load by changing the settings as suggested. I had to try a number of values though, got it to work when I got down to 150M.
  Any ideas on the reason for the error? Everthing worked fine for quite a long time and this problem just popped up one day.

I have no clue. I don't use IE at all, so all I got came from some searches, I did.
I'll definitely remember this solution, and I'm glad, it worked.

I exactly halfed the -Xmx number in the Java toolbar and that did the trick. I also deleted older version.. if that helped I dunno.
