Hmm, maybe I should keep XP for a while longer...
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:32:03 AM »
Ok, slow day in the shop so I thought I'd install Vista and get a good look at it. I've had a version of Vista Ultimate laying around here. They sent it to me months back as a freebie, probably hoping I'd suggest using it to other people...

So far, I'm not too impressed.

"Windows needs your permission to continue"
This pops up on about every other thing I try to open. Very annoying.

First thing I wanted to do was install Firefox. Got to the website, the moment I click the download link, IE7 shuts down instantly, "Internet Explorer has stopped working." Came back, tried again, worked fine. Next I decided to look at the new features of Vista, like Windows Media Center. "Windows Media Center has stopped working." Hmm, guess not. Let's try something else... let's see about my hardware... in the System window, my system Manufacturer is listed as Dell... although I've never owned a Dell computer (and never will) and I built this computer myself. Hey! Let's install Windows Live Messenger so I can talk to my friends! "Windows Live (MCC) Setup Bootstrap has stopped working."

Thank you, Sir Bill of Gates, for this delightfully wonderfully product.

No, this is after the pre-releases. It's the first retail release.

It's already been ditched. XP is back on for now. I'll look at it again when SP2 comes out :P

Did you mean SP1, which still hasn't been released?

I have a notebook PC with Vista Home Premium and haven't had any problems.  I'm using IE; haven't installed any other browser on it yet.  No problem downloading files.  Media Player works fine.  I have Yahoo! Messenger installed and it also works fine.

No, I meant SP2. hehe I'll wait that long, or as I did with XP, until I have no other choice.

Media PLAYER worked fine, it was the Media Center thing I couldn't get to load, among a number of other programs.

Who knows, maybe it was just a bad install. I did a full install, not an upgrade, but anything could have gone wrong. For now, anyway, I'll stick with XP. The serial isn't registered with Microsoft yet, so I could still install it on one of the test benches and see if it works...

I installed vista on my machine at work last week and it seemed like I was learning a new operating system. And that's how I was able to find out a few nice tools in vista. I stopped trying to complain that it was different and telling myself I didn't like it and that the XP gui was better and started exploring it like did linux, unix, and beos. After I started to be more interested in learning a new os, it started being more interesting.
So my advice to you is, don't think that it's going to be like XP. It's not. Instead, think of it like you would if you were starting on linux for the first time. Explore. Theres some nice tools in it. :)
I especially like the new mmc. Much more intuitive and flexible.

User Account Control (UAC) is the very first thing, you should turn off.

Well it's not the first time I've started a new OS. I've been on computers since back in the DOS days. I have no problem taking the time to learn things, as long as everything works. My problem is the fact that everything crashes the moment you try to start it.

Anyway, like I said, won't be putting it on my main computer again until I have to. I'll stick it on one of my test benches for experimentation purposes.
