I briefly considered setting up a triple boot (Win98/XP Pro/Vista) until another post reminded me that 98 gets confused if you give it too much RAM to play with.  I didn't fork out all that $$ to get 4GB of low latency RAM to limit myself to 512 MB!
Why is this thus?  What is the reason for this thusness?

For all the people that don't want to pay the money for the newest software and hardware, I would just recommend linux. ;D
The people who are still stuck in win98 land probably just use the default settings anyways, so linux wouldn't be all that different or difficult to use.

      patio:
It looks like the workarounds limit the amount of RAM Windows 98 uses so that it doesn't choke, or am I reading it incorrectly?

      Correct.
It maxes out at about 768 and stays stable...these settings can be used in both a dual-boot setup or on a VM.
