    Slow Windows Shutdown
    « on: January 29, 2008, 10:01:20 AM »
My computer recently started taking quite a while to shut down...it really hangs on Saving Your Settings.
I had tried running  a "User Profile Hive Clean Up Software" which did rectify the problem...but I was just wondering if there is some way to actually find out what is causing this or to monitor what is running during the shut down process.  Everything else is working just fine except that I did notice when I shut my printer off...it would take forever to hear the windows tone thing that lets you know when something is shut off or unplugged.  I did re-install the drivers for the printer and still have the same problem.

    Windows XP SP 2

    Thanks in advance.

When you say that you also noticed it was slow to play the windows tone that lets you know when your printer (or other usb device) is unplugged or plugged in... it makes me think that this slowness is not just during shutdown.

Am I correct in assuming this?

Also, try Safe Mode, and see, if shutdown goes better.
    You may also...
Download, and install Quick Startup: http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html
Go File>Export, save report, and paste it into your next post.
I'll look, what you have there.

Broni's suggestion is a good one.  I would recommend that since shutdown time is the only time you've noticed a slowdown.

        Hi Broni,
Here's the Quick Startup Log...was curious myself whether Microsoft Office needs to run at startup since I rarely use it.
        Thanks again.

I can see why it takes to long to shutdown... you've got a lot running.

Weathereye, Nero, Office, Scansoft (and it's multiple opening programs), Rocket Dock, Roboform?, DesktopEarth...

Yeah, you might want to get rid of some of the clutter... or at least don't have it run at startup.

Yeah there is a lot running there.  The Wife likes Desktop Earth & Weather Eye, I like Roboform & RocketDock.
Is the other stuff really needed at startup?  Just wouldn't want to shut off something that might cause a problem.  By the way...how do you get Microsoft Office out of the Startup Menu?  Can't seem to find an option to disable it.
          Thank You.

1 way is to go start --> run --> msconfig, then go to the last tab on the right and deselect what you don't want to startup.

However, if you can find the settings within the program, that would be better.

Boy you guys are quick!  Thanks a lot, but I just realized I can disable startup programs by using Quick Startup itself...is this an OK method of turning things off?  Or should I still use the start-run-msconfig way to turn them off?
            Thanks once again.

I personally haven't used quick startup to disable startup programs, so I'm not sure how it works/how safe it is.

One other option that's safe is to check your start --> programs --> startup folder and delete any shortcuts you don't want to run at startup.

There are number of ways to disable startups, Quick Startup is one of them.
You guys exchanged some thoughts, so I don't know what was disabled, what was not, so I'll take a look at that log, like nothing was done.

You cab safely disable the following entries:
            - NvCplDaemon (needed only, if you overclock your video card)
            - SSBkgdUpdate
            - PaperPort PTD
            - IndexSearch
            - Adobe Reader Speed Launcher (I recommend, you unistall Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is enormous hog, and install FoxIt Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php), which is much smaller, and faster.)
            - NeroFilterCheck
            - nwiz
            - SetDefPrt
            - ControlCenter2.0
            - ctfmon.exe (unless you use more, then 1 language in M$ Office - Download, and run CTFMON-Remover: http://www.gerhard-schlager.at/en/projects/ctfmonremover/)
            - Microsoft Office
            - Status Monitor

            You had a lot, sir.

              Thanks Broni,
I disabled the entries you suggested...was just wondering about Microsoft Office?  I uninstalled it yesterday because I was having some issues with getting it to work properly anyway (it was only disk 1 put in as a freebee from my computer repair place), but I noticed that I still have 2 instances of ctfmon.exe ?  I disabled them for now. Should they not have dissappeared after unistalling Microsoft Office?
Also...will switching from Adobe Acrobate Reader to FoxIt be a seamless change or will I have to change any other settings elsewhere.
Can't thank you enough for all the help.  ;D
