Word can not send email MAPI failure using gmail

an associate can not send an email b/c of the following message; Word can not send mail because of MAPI failure; unspecified error.  Using Windows XP, Office 2003, exchange server,  gmail account to send in this case. Have work-around but would like to fix problem-this problem started after weeks of no problems sending mail this way.

If you start word with the /a switch does the issue go away? If so you need to repair office. Check out this knowledge base article for details.

Thanks I deleted a file with regedit, OfficekeyOld, then repaired Outlook and now ok. Thanks again you put me on right path.
