    Video card or MB?
    « on: March 13, 2008, 12:03:44 PM »
My screen stays black with a no signal on the screen when I try to boot up. I am running a PCI E motherboard. Thinking it may be the video card I opened my comp and removed the video card and tried installing into the other slot for the video card. It still stays black. I tried another card with the same results.
It sounds like the MB is bad but would both PCI slots go bad at the same time?
    Please help!! ???

Try taking out the ram and seeing if there isnt a beep.  This should help tell you if the board is bad.  Did you try the Video card in another machine?
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

Does it have onboard video?  Have taken out the cmos battery?  Have you tried more than one monitor??

The odds of both PCI slots going bad wt the same time are high ...but not impossible.
Where did this 2nd card come from ? ?

Hmm, I actually just bought it through an E-Bay auction.

No, I didn't try the card in another computer, just the 2 slots in mine. I did try another card though. It doesn't work either....

If they're both eBay cards they could both be duds...
Try them in another machine to see...

one question all of us havent asked, Do you have the drivers for the video card? that could explain alot since you got it off of E-bay.

Bad video cards can kill motherboards. I have seen it happen. Sometimes more than one. First the card kills one motherboard, then, not realising what has happened, it is placed in another PC to "confirm"...

windows has generic driver to run a graphics card until you get the actual driver.

I am also having the same problem since yesterday. Also thinking that my video card is spoilt, I went to buy a new one. But then the problem still remained unsolved. I also thought that the culprit must be my motherboard.

Trying my luck, I replaced the CMOS battery with a new one, and voila my computer sprang to life again. I had been troubled by this since then: Can the problem really be the battery? It sounds so incredible, or is this just a temporary solution?

A battery can run down in 3 years

The Computerhope guide to CMOS says 10 years, but I saw this on another site...

                          Quote
These batteries are advertised to have a life span of five years.

While the life span of the battery might be five years under ideal circumstances, it's not advised to wait until the battery is dead to replace it. Remember that the battery is the only thing that keeps you from losing CMOS settings when you power down your PC.

If you do not replace the motherboard on PC for a long time, you should consider changing the battery every two or three years. Why change the battery so soon? The reason is simple - if you wait until the battery begins to die, your PC can forget its CMOS settings.

Only 1 card was from E-Bay. The other one I bought new and have been using it for about a year now. Of course, right out of warranty.
Question though. If it is just bad drivers how do I get it to boot to install the drivers? ??? ::)

its probably one of the built-in chips thats dead, and so of course u cant remove the chips since there built right on to the board.
basicly u just need a new motherboard
If you dont know DOS, you dont know Windows...

Thats why Bill Gates created the Windows NT Family.
