Review section?
« on: April 03, 2008, 01:45:39 AM »
I thought it could be another added bonus section for the forums to add a "Reviews" section. A place where visitors can post their own personal review on a software product, hardware product, and/or company or service. Thought this could be helpful for those people who wonder about what type of video card they should be or anti-virus program they should install on their computer or just want to know the good/bad on a product.

I'm thinking that if approved by the community (you all) that we'd start it off in the "Other" section. If it blossoms into something  big where there are too many posts to go through or we want it to be more specific, e.g. hardware only reviews we could also do that in the future.

Let me know what you think and/or other ideas that may follow this same concept.

I like the idea of a reviews area.

It would be great, and we would probably get more Google search hits (I search reviews every so often, most recently was this KRZR cell phone I have)

I think it would be better than those huge Review sites that you get lost in.
I think it would be best in the Others category as well (I dont see any other place it could easily go)

The other thing I just pondered, what about a Consumer Electronics support board? (Just a thought)

Thanks for the feedback, as far as the consumer electronics. I don't think Computer Hope gets that many consumer electronics questions to justify a new board.

Something to think about:

To make them meaningful and useful,   would it be a good idea to provide an outline?  ... broad as it may be.

If not an outline,  then at least some guidelines?

Try to conjure up in your mind the kind of review you would expect patio or Calum to write.
Now compare that to a youthful, pissed off member that doesn't know how to configure his new equipment,  and writes a 'review',  "I just bought an XYZ, and it SUUUUUCKS!"
Perhaps this is not the best example,  but I hope I'm getting my point across.

I'm thinking we want to minimize the second type, and promote what I expect from the first type.    ;)

Would relegating it to the "Other" section impede its growth though?
Good info would be mixed in with all the other posts.

I guess I should ask:   Is it a real chore to add another sub-board?   If not,  then even if "Reviews" was under "Other", that would at least seperate out the posts and make them easier to refer others to.

Again -  just something to consider.

I think it is an excellent idea.   It has the potential to be yet another very useful aspect of CH.

Very nice idea.
I'm assuming, the forum is not set, yet, so could it be something more like "Reviews and recommendations"?
I'm asking, because I've been posting all those freebies under "Computer news", and they're not really computer news.

Good idea.

I agree with Broni, it should be "Reviews and recommendations".

Yeah I think that's a good idea. Although it could get crowded potentially, but initially we could create one section known as "Reviews and recommendations". I did have a concern though when thinking about the idea and that's the potential for spammers to take advantage of it. So I'd think that when created one of the rules will be that you can't be affiliated with the product or service you're recommending or reviewing.

How about, if that section will be visible only to the people with at least, say 5 posts, or one can post there only, if one has at least 5 posts?

I think it shoud be visible to all, that way, people could Google search reviews.

I am still 100% positive that its possible to limit access to posting on a board by your post count, making it so that you could, for example, prevent all users with under 5 posts from posting.

Its somewhere in the Board Permissions area (Permissions by Board, perhaps?) of the Administration center.

Although only a few have replied so far, I think it's fair to say based off all replies that this would be a welcome addition so it has been added.

Also Zylstra maybe you can point me into the location of how to prevent new users from posting a new topic in a board while still allowing regular members to post that would be appreciated. As far as I could tell it's not possible.

Ok. No problem. I noticed you are having server issues because getting timed out when trying to join chat.

*cringes*
That was one of my biggest fears, actually.

I am going to start investigating the issue now (well, further investigation, that is), the timeouts are going beyond what I want them to.

I am currently ping attacking my own server, attempting to get a response out of it (I am not on the local network)

Hey, one pro of the timeouts: Less spam!

Yes, I think a Review section is a great idea.  I think it should be limited to the focus of the forum, just so it doesn't get completely crazy -- computer hardware, software, and peripherals (although peripherals may get to be a gray area -- I still remember the "Dilbert" comic that had to do with the disk drive for his toaster).

You are certainly encouraged to set any rules / limitations you see fit.  "This product suxxors" shouldn't be allowed to stand -- it might be an acceptable beginning if the poster goes on to provide valid reasons why.

Pehaps -- I'm not sure -- a questionnaire format or a form -- something that requires a bit of effort without being overwhelming may discourage the "drive-by" posters and "flamers."

I want to be the first to review the built-in cupholder that's on my desktop computer!
 ;) ;)

i havent read all of the previous posts, so if this has already been brought up i apologize. personally, i believe this should be in the "other" category, under its own title. its seems kind of "tucked away" being a child board. what does everyone else think?

If it grows enough I'd be more than happy to move it onto the main page. I'd like to however keep the main page as clean as possible. I really think having a forum that lists dozens of different boards is overwhelming to most users and messy looking.

For limiting the board permissions to only allow users with 5+ posts to create a review, it is possible.
Its a bit complicated though, it requires creating a new membergroup (users under 5 posts, which, dont have to have a different name than new members, currently titled "Newbie" if I remember correctly)

Once you have done that, you can create a new Permissions group for one specific board by going to Members, going to settings, enabling "Enable permissions for post count based groups", then selecting "Edit Profiles".

Take a quick look around, its actually kind of simple.
Create a new profile in there.  Select the membergroup that users have when they first register and have under 5 posts, and set the permissions as needed.

From this point, its self explanatory.

It might be overly complicated, in my opinion. I think we should wait and see if the boards get abused by human spammers or not.
