Microsoft Pulls XP SP3, Delays Release Indefinitely

April 29, 2008

DailyTech reported earlier today that Windows XP's third service pack was ready for full deployment via Windows Update, as promised by Microsoft.  However, in an eleventh hour move sure to draw criticism, the service pack was yanked by Microsoft and will not be released on April 29th as previously promised.

I'm sure everyone who went out of their way to install this from other sites will be thrilled to know this. They now have the wrong service pack installed ::)

Which is exactly why I haven't done it myself or recommended anyone else do it.  :P

This is very disappointing. I think we should all just buy Macs and tell Microsoft to go  stick it! >:(

The pack was pulled because it breaks or otherwise compromises the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS).  The RMS application is relatively uncommon and is chiefly used by small/midsize businesses, making Microsoft's decision to pull the pack seem a bit unusual.

I don't use RMS

Seems a bit extreme.

Except for several networking and security improvements, the bulk of SP3 was previously released as Windows Updates. Systems that have been updated regularly will find much of the service in SP3 has already been applied.

The last service pack was more than three years ago. A few more weeks doesn't seem unreasonable.

I installed sp3 yesterday from the technet download. Works fine. I don't know what all the fuss is about...

There is no fuss really, just the big deal that the media is making of it. As Sidewinder stated, the bulk of what's in SP3 has been released over time in updates. The issue only impacts people using MSDRMS. They seem to know what the problem is and are already working on a solution. Probably won't be long before they release it.

Question.

If someone were to begin using the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System with the previous SP3 would it 'break' their system as well?

It does not matter what small service is not working...if it's not ready for release then it shouldn't be released.
Just because it's service some wouldn't use does not make it an insignificant problem....there are millions of users that probably do need that service.

There have been reports of people losing connectivity after installing it....should this be pooh bah'ed as well ? ?

I installed it on Tuesday... absolutely no problem. Of course if you are using patched system files such as tcpip.sys and uxtheme.dll they will be replaced just like they were with SP2, but SP3 versions of these are readily available. I don't think there are "millions" of systems with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System.

I see it in plenty of Hijackthis logs. People probably don't know what it's for ( I honestly don't) but have it installed anyway.

Maybe we aren't...

But that being said, all businesses need updates as well as home users so I have to agree with patio and think there are millions. Including those employed by MS.

Neither Patio nor you nor I know how many business use RMS.  Microsoft’s business applications compete with the likes of Oracle and SAP, but tend to appeal to small and medium-sized businesses. They are recent products, and are very much in a minority.

So with some users running this, but Microsoft pulling it does that mean when re-released that it will be XP SP3.1? ;) In all serious that's really unfortunate that they had such a big issue that it had to be pulled. Almost grateful that I've been so busy I didn't have the time to go and download it for any of my machines with XP.
