Windows XP pro dislikes phone Modems...
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:26:42 AM »
My computer is P4 HT 2.8ghz, 780mb RAM, 40+40GB HDD, GForce5200 AGP, CD-rom, FDD, PM800M2 mobo, etc. I'm using broadband with external ADSL device with LAN.

It is multiboot with XP pro (SP2) and win2k (SP4).

I've an internal phone modem 'Motorola SM56', which cannot be installed in XP, whereas it works normal in win2k.

In XP, windows detects the hardware and searches for driver, which is it locates automatically. When copying of driver files is almost complete, error pops up saying "Windows was unable to install the modem", press OK or cancel.

After that, another message is displayed: "Cannot install this Hardware. The specified service does not exist as an installed service".

So the SM56 modem remains inoperative and with a yellow mark in the device manager. No such error in other operating system win2000pro, where this modem works perfect.

I've tried with several other drivers from the web, but they all fail. I'm sure, I've the correct drivers. Even tried changing modem to another PCI slot. The phone modem works well on another PC having XP pro.

Another symptom, perhaps not related. When I install the software for my Bluetooth Dongle 'BlueSoleil', it progress well until it shows, 'installing Bluetooth Modem' and a warning shows: "No Modem is installed". The installation process ends without completing.

It appears the installations of modems fail due to missing installed service.
Please advice, how to install the service?

Letting XP handle installing the proper drivers is not always the most reliable method...
This applies to all ver. of Windows not just XP.

Here is  the DLoad page for your modem driver.
DLoad it to the desktop or another folder.
Remove the modem in Device Manager by right clicking it and selecting uninstall...
Power down and re-boot.
When the New Hardware window opens simply point it to the driver you grabbed instead of letting it use the Windows one and select install...
The modem should work fine now.

As to the Bluetooth issues the modem issue may not be related. The Bluetooth drivers should be on the MBoard driver CD that shipped with the machine...if you don't have one visit the MBoard manuf. site and DLoad and re-install them....
Good Luck and let us know.

Thanks Potio.

Manually pointing the driver during installation was tried out before also, without any success.

Anyway, fetched the driver from the suggested Motorola website and unzipped it.

Uninstalled the modem from Device manager and from Add/remove programs. Rebooted. Windows detected hardware 'PCI Simple Communication Comtroller'. In the Wizard, selected Advanced Option (install from a list or specified location). A message: Confirm File Replace: the target file exists and is newer than the souce. Selected to overwrite it. When copying of driver files is almost complete, an error: "An error occured during installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service". Click Finish to close the wizard.

I've a feeling that there is no problem with hardware or its driver. Installation procedure is also correct. Its the specified service, which does not exist. How to enable the service?

Go to Start/Run and type in services.msc and hit Enter...
If there is a listing for PCI simple comm. device right clik it and select enable or automatic....
Then repeat the above procedure.

I'm still thinking your motherboard drivers are not installed correctly or possibly corrupt.
If the above does not work go to Start/Run and this time type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Re-boot when it finishes and try again.

Go to Start/Run and type in services.msc

Ran services.msc. The PCI simple comm device is not found in the list.

Ran sfc /scannow. Took very long time to complete the scan, with XP CD in the drive.

I'll reboot and try services.msc again and post the results tomorrow.

Good night

Further to my reply #4, rebooted the computer and checked the services (local) list. Still PCI Simple Comm device is not found in the list.

Also tried to install the SM56 modem and it failed with the same error:

"An error occured during installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

Something else to try?

Tough room...   ;)

How old is the modem?

Is Win XP one of the operating systems for which the modem was made?

I'm easy like a Sunday Morning, Dias.

OK, Aegis:
Its about 5 years old. Can't say, if it is compatible with XP. Its working fine in Win200Pro from another partition in my computer.

I've tested it in XP on another computer and no problems there.

Well, if it worked in another XP system, it should work in this one, one would think...that's interesting.

In Windows 98 (you can stop laughing now), you need to have the "Dial-up Networking" component from the "Communications" grouping installed.  This would be done from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab, Communications.

Is it possible that Windows XP has a similar capability to add/remove Windows components (possibly from the Window XP CD if setup archives aren't available on the hard drive)?

Have you physically removed the modem ? ?
Or is it onboard ? ?

Did you try re-installing the MBoard drivers ? ?
