    256 MB RAM appearing as 192 MB

    would anyone tell the reason why system showing a shortened memory?

      actually i thought that everything would be clear with question itself, as this issue is common for all hardware and software configuration.

      well...i have windows xp sp2,  DDR1 RAM with 256 memory, intel desktop board D101GGC, pentium-4 3.06GHZ

        You're probably using an onboard video subsystem which has reserved 64 MB of system memory for its own use.  64=256-192.

          i am not sure if i am using onboard video subsystem as i dont know it at all. actually  i know this much that system always shows memory a bit shortened. but i dont know where that part of memory is used?

          Pull the cover off the machine and look for where your monitor cable connects to the back of the machine. Does it seem to connect to plug into a circut board that is standing up by itself? Or does it seem to plug into your motherboard?

          The onboard video subsystem would be part of the motherboard. For your video to work the system takes 64 megs from your RAM and uses it to run your video.

          So this mean if your computer has 256 megs of RAM than the system uses 64 megs right off the top and that leaves your computer 192 megs to work with.

          By the way, that is very little RAM to run XP. You should buy some more and bring it up to at least 512 better yet 1 gig.

          If you don't want to open the case, just look where it plugs in. If there is a blue plug near the keyboard/mouse ports it is onboard, if it is located in an expansion slot it is not.

          You can also download and run Everest to see EVERY component in that machine without opening the case.
