How often should you run a scan on your computer?
    « on: June 02, 2008, 02:59:32 PM »
To prevent any future infections, I'm curious as to how often should I run a virus scan and anti-spyware scan.

Also, which scan would you recommend?

I'm going to direct family members to this forum so they can check out their computers and make sure it isn't infected.

    Depends on a few things.

    (a) If you visit "dodgy" sites scan often.
    (b) If you think you may have been infected or suffered an intrusion.
    (c) If you use p2p scan often.

Basically the period between scanning is dictated by the quality of your defences and your experiences over a period.   My preference is for AVG, Zone Alarm and SpywareBlaster.  I scan irregularly about every 3 months and not detected an intrustion for as long as I can remember.  My maintenance programs are AdAware, Spybot S&D and obviously AVG scan.

Other members will have their own preferences and maintenance routines.

    Good luck.

I run Avg and WindowsDefender on 3 machines EVERY day.
In addition I run IE TempFile Cleanup, Disk Clean-up and Defragmenter on one machine every day, the others once a week.

As my machines run every day, I think it is not wise not to do so.

Doesn't cost anything! So why not? I Like a "Clean Machine".

Many companies recommend scanning your computer weekly.

Personally, I only run about twice a month, sometimes less. This is for two major reasons:
I can tell if my system is infected by any sort of malware/grayware
I know what to look for in suspicious sites, and I take caution around them

If you are a user not familiar with the computer, and download frequently, or you are connected to a network, then (especially if its a network with kids on it) I would highly recommend scheduling your computer to scan Every day, every other day, or every three days.

If you are just a basic user, who doesn't excessively download, and knows how to pretty much avoid anything catastrophically bad on the internet, then  I could go with the companies recommendation and schedule a scan once a week.

    A key idea though:
If you leave your computer on anyways, you might as well have it scan daily when not in use like Patio does, since your not loosing any of your time or computer resources.

Always make sure you have a resident/on-access scanner (a scanner that scans files when they are opened) Its not necessarily to have the scanner on high (meaning it scans everything no matter what), but, usually a good idea to have it set to "normal" scanning.
Running your scanner on High constantly isnt a bad practice, but, can waste system resources. If running a scanner on high doesnt slow things down too much for you, then that is probably the best option. On slower computers, running on high can waste a lot of time for you, the user.

Still, nevertheless, always back up your data in the even that you get an extremely malicious virus that destroys all your data because some person wanted to make you miserable.

Very same approach here. I don't even remember, when I ran full AV scan last time.
    Surely, I don't recommend it :)

      ...what's SP2?

I just asked the question because currently, I'm getting rid of infections on my computer thanks to evilfantasy and I'd like to further prevent them. Just curious as to how often I should run scans on here.

       :)

I currently have my virus scanner set to scan weekly.  Even that seems unnecessary.  I can say I haven't encountered a virus in several years, during which my ISP was Earthlink and now Embarq (a change which was forced on me by Embarq, the local telephone here which provides my DSL service).

I think the trend in recent years has been increasing protection by ISP's.  They're scanning e-mail before it gets to us, the clients.  That's good, but it can also cause a laxity which could carry some risk.  So, I'm not advocating you don't need anti-virus protection, but, for myself, I see no need to run a full scan more than weekly, if that.

        Oh, no.

I created this topic before the SP2 problem happened.

I mainly rely on the real time protection I have in place. Avast and MalwareBytes.

Its always a good idea to use more than one virus scanner. Never run two virus scanners at the same time though, use one as a On-Access/Resident scanner (one that is always running) and also use that same scanner for scanning your regular files, and a second backup scanner to pick up anything the first one might have missed.

        Q. Why would two scanners detect differently?
        A. Besides the fact that is possible for one scanner to just not be able to detect certain viruses due to how its hidden or if its in the virus database or not, virus scanners are programmed differently, and therefor, might detect differently.
Some might look for something in a file one way, the other, another way.

        Q. If I have constantly scanning detection (on-access/resident), why do I need to run the regular scanner?
        A. Some viruses are designed to "get past" the automatic detections. Some will even disable the resident scanner, and prevent you from knowing about other viruses on your system. This is one major reason why I recommend avast!, it has the ability to scan the system before Windows boots if you schedule a scan, preventing viruses from stopping it.

                Q. Wait.. how do I know if my scanner is actually scanning files then?
                A. Can you see its icon in the system tray? If you doubleclick on it, does it still pop up and say the status is okay? If it does, your fine. If its not in the system tray, then you might have a problem.

You have to remember, some viruses are excessively complex, this meaning:
They could potentially stop your scanner and replace it with a fake one
They could block your scanner from updating by blocking the update server in your HOSTS file
They could modify themselves to prevent from being "seen" by your scanner
They could just destroy your system, and it would never make a difference in the first place.

Virus scanners are there to just help prevent infections, they can still happen. You should always back up important data, usually best if its on an external backup, to avoid loosing things.

Run scans often - 3 times a week if you know what suspicious behaviour to watch for.  Assuming you use a comprehensive scanner, which scans emails as well as your system, is compatible with ensuring a firewall, etc.  Update your anti virus programme daily, a decent one will do this when you log on to the internet.

Weekly you should also - defragment your hdd
          - delete temporary internet files

Monthly do a disk clean up

Once in a while try window webroot washer or something of the like to wash slack space and shred deleted files.

Avoid downloading files if you do not have a scanner programme that automatically checks for viruses, worms, trojans, malware, spyware, key stroke loggers, cookies, etc.

In our corner of the earth our preferences are (NZ):
          1. Trend Micro INternet Security (if you got bucks)
          2. McAfee online security suite (affordable bucks)
          3. Avoid Nortons if you can - symantics god like mentality can be annoying and confusing
4.AVG if you think you are on to it and got no bucks...back this up with fortnightly scans for free from www.trendmicro.com free house call.  This loads some files on your system and runs a free scan, then you choose how you want them fixed without any financial traps.

          5. check out www.download.com for window webroot washer 30 day trial.  You'll be amazed at how much free space you can regain....

          good luck    :D
