Computer can't locate Iomega 100 zip drive
    « on: June 15, 2008, 10:08:00 AM »
For a while now I haven't been able to get my computer to locate my Iomega 100 zip drive. It isn't a devastating predicament but obviously it is something I would like to be able to make use of. Otherwise I have to use floppy discs to back up data (which is plainly absurd for most of my stuff) or burn a CD, which, though inexpensive, just seems a waste.
It's possible that my SCSI card, which is how my zip drive connects to my computer, was damaged during repair work done a while ago. I wouldn't know how to tell one way or the other.
I use Windows 98 (yes, how funny...) and my computer was built (more or less) for me by a store which went out of business a while ago. I bought the computer in 2002.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer to me.

Have you tried re-installing the drivers ? ?
    Re-boot afterwards.
You could also try removing the card and re-seating it...

I didn't realize people still used those things. Had a peak at Iomega's website though, looks like they still make them, but couldn't locate a SCSI model. They only had ATAPI and USB, unless I overlooked something.

Yes, I did reinstall the drivers, tried to look for updates to the drivers, turned the switches on the zip on-off, off-on, this, that and the other. Zilch, nada, bupkiss!
I didn't try removing and reinstalling the card though. Being the klutz that I am, I'm a little hesitant to try it but then again I really have nothing to lose at this point.

or burn a CD, which, though inexpensive, just seems a waste.1

Until you need to restore your backed up data.

Does the drive itself appear to be functioning? It might have just gone south.

Iomega Zip drives are famous for being unreliable.

When was the last time this drive worked? Have you tried it on another machine?

Have you thought of getting a USB external drive for your backups?

Iomega can hold only 100 megs....external drive can be gigs big. And they are cheap to buy.
