    No sound on windows 98
    « on: June 20, 2008, 02:48:09 PM »
Hello, recently I downloaded some things and then uninstalled them since I didn't need them anymore.

I think I may have accidently uninstalled all(?) my sound components x____x;; I can't find my win 98 SE disc at all, either; none of my other discs with my computer information on them have any sound drivers or anything on them.

My volume controls don't open and no sound plays on any webpages or in WMP.

Is there anywhere I can download something to fix my sound issues/replace what I lost?

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to computers ;__; If I can't find help here i'm most likely going to go without sound forever, lol.

Or you can go to majorgeeks.com & scrool down to system info ,look for BELARC, from there download your system read out. Then you can find the driver you will need .

        I followed your instructions, Xavier.

I've got my system read out now, but which part of it shows what driver I need?

It says my computer's made by gateway o_o
But there's no sound drivers listed for it on the sound driver page here.

YES look under MULTI MEDIA, If you cannot find the driver i would buy a sound card and install it to get your sound back.

          "Multimedia
          ES1869 Control Interface (WDM)
ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive (WDM)
Gameport Joystick (no joystick connected) "

          Blah, I got nothing.
Guess i'll have to buy a new sound card.

Thanks for your help, everyone~ much appreciated.

Before you buy anything try to install audio driver. Your driver is here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/ESS-AUDIO/ESS-Sound-Card-ES1869-1087.shtml

That website didn't work for me, but I googled it and found another page :3

Unfortunetly, i'm not very fammiliar with .zip files. I've got the "file download" popup minimized right now.

Should I open or save it? If I do save it, where should I save it to?

Save it to your desktop. To open zip file, download, and install 7-zip: http://www.7-zip.org/

I tried installing it, but it kept asking me to insert my driver disk and then my win 98' CD- neither of which I have at the moment.

Once again, thanks to all who took the time to respond. I'm going to fish around for my disk/CD tonight, hopefully i'll find one of 'em then get this fixed :]

When it asks you to insert driver disk, point it to the file, you unzipped on your desktop.
Windows 98 CD won't help, because it doesn't contain any audio drivers.

Once I go to install it asks me to restart, the installation then begins right after I login to my computer, so none of the desktop items have loaded at all yet :/ I tried clicking "desktop" then O.King it, but the same error message comes up saying that it can't find a specific file and I need to put my driver in.

                You're doing something wrong.
Unzip downloaded file into your desktop.
Go to Device Manager, expand "Sound, video and game controllers" key.
Right click on "ES1869", click Properties, then Driver tab.
                Click "Update driver".
The wizard will open, and point it to the desktop.

My instructions were not fully correct.
You need to uninstall current driver, first.
Right click on "ES1869", click Properties, then Driver tab.
                  Click "Uninstall" button.
                  Then, proceed with new installation.

No "uninstall" button showed up for me.

On a brighter note, I found my Windows 98' CD and startup(boot?) disc.
There's an ESS audio driver on the CD, but I get an error message when I click "install". "Cannot find XXXX file. Make sure the pathname and filename are correct and all required libraries are available etc. etc."

Should I just reinstall Win98'? Would anything happen to my current files/downloaded programs/wireless adaptor if I did?

                    EDIT: I actually tried reinstalling it, but chickened out while things were being installed and shut down because I was afraid i'd lose everything and not be able to get help anymore >___>;; Now i'm missing microsoft paint, wordpad, and god knows what else, hahaha. *digs self a deeper hole* I am such epic fail ;___;

It's been a while since Win 98, but I think, reinstalling Windows over the top shouldn't touch your data.

You first need to go to the Root folder and rename win.com to win.old.
Then when you re-install 98 your Programs and Data remain intact...
Any other method and you will lose your data and programs.

I found my win.ini. It's a notepad document.. right? Atleast, that's what it opened in.

I searched it for "win.com" but didn't find anything at all.

My bad. I keep forgetting, it's Win 98.
You want to find win.com, not win.ini in C:\Windows

Oh, okay. I found it and it opened up a black popup window.

I went to properties(only button other than font that's clickable).

Should I rename the "cmd line" to "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.OLD"?

Sorry if i'm asking too many questions. I'm just paranoid i'm going to mess up again ):

Ack. The only way I found win.com was using the searchbar; as soon as I hit enter the black box opened x_x How do I find it on it's own without it opening by itself?

Also, because I know i'm going to be asking this as soon as I find it.. *headdesk*

I'm supposed to right click on the icon to rename it, right? Not some other fancy way or anything?

Open Windows Explorer (through Start menu, or hold Windows key, and hit "e" key), navigate to C:\Windows, find win.com file, and right click on it, click "Rename".

Got it, but the file isn't called "win.com" it's just "WIN" o3o
But it's the same file that came up when I searched it.

Should I still change it's name?
What about the win.com I mentioned earlier too now?
Since I think that may be the only reason it came up in the search.

To find win.com file, you may need to enable hidden, and system files view.
In Windows Explorer go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders, and uncheck Hide protectedoperating system files.
