Hey

I have whats probably a "normal" symptom, my 1 year old laptop has been slowing down, both in loadup speed and program speed, ever since i bought it.

I looked around on the site and did things like empty my prefetch folder and clear all the startup programs in msconfig, both didn't do very much to anything (except nothing loads now (not that anything did then either, i never ever let things start up automatically.))

Is this me being paranoid or what?

@Bones92: Didn't you just install SP3? Do you think this has anything to do with your 'slowdown?'

I saw that...SP3 was a stretch! It sounds like 'Windows creep,' but, quite frankly, I haven't noticed it (much!) with XP - at least not like re-installing 95 or 98 every couple months as 'routine maintenance! I assume that you have adequate free space?

Any chance of malware being the issue?

Not sure what you mean by this? I didn't recommend installing anything - if this is in reference to the Black Viper link, it's just the opposite. The site allows you to stop unnecessary services from running.

Dxdiag says "478mb RAM" and "~1.6ghz processor" but i've been told that because my processor is dual it means i have double this...

e.g. Task Manager says 1121 Mb of ram and so does dxdiag under "page file" so there must be some truth to this.

And as ref to anti virus stuff I have:

Windows Firewall
AVG Free - not run very much
Mamutu - always running when on internet
Windows Defender

And i've never had any viruses stuff, i don't use limewire and i don't go to bad sites...

Did you get these numbers from System Information? What is the number for 'Total Physical Memory?'

I don't know what you mean by this but it has nothing to do with a dual core processor or your physical RAM.

Also, what are your harddrive numbers: total and free space?

With regard to your security programs, I am not familiar with Mamutu so I don't know how 'heavy' (how many system resources it uses) it runs; but, if you don't run AVG real-time (and I would suggest that you re-consider this; in fact, I would suggest that you uninstall AVG, if it is version 8, and replace it with Avast! and run it real-time), Windows Defender and Windows Firewall ought not slow down the computer.

Given the above, if it were my computer that I 'felt' was running 'slow' or 'slower than before,' I would: a) download and run CCleaner (but not the Registry Tool) and make certain that it was set to clear all temp files and index.dat, b) do a virus scan, c) download and run run a scan with SuperAntiSpyware, d) defrag, e) purchase RAM to total 1 GB. You can also try running with Mamutu turned off to see if that helps.

If your Page File usage is over 1GB, something is wrong..

480mb RAM for total avaliable, but even the brochure on my computer says its a gb.
I had someone important tell me that because of something to do with my processor it really was a gb (by someone important i mean a Ex head engineer for Hewlett-Packard) but i just can't remember what he quoted to me (i have a terrible memory)

I usually have 43 processes running, with and average of 3% CPU usage and ~390M of Commit Charge (that does refer to ram doesn't it?)

Only partially - look here: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/c/commit_charge.htm

Look up the RAM on your computer the way @carbon said to do it. That number will be the actual physical RAM amount - from what you said, it ought to = 1GB.

I see two options:
- buy another 512MB of RAM
- clean reinstall (how old is your computer? ever reinstalled Windows?)
I'd start with 20 bucks, and extra RAM.

512 - 480 = 32......you likely have your video borrowing 32M of RAM which threw everyone off.
If it was sold to you saying there was iG then you got ripped off or someone helped themselves to a 512M stik of RAM.
