Possible to become dyslexic/lose spelling ability?
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:48:16 AM »
Lately I've noticed I can't spell as well as I used to, especially on the computer.
I tend to get my letters really muddled up and have to go back and correct it.
Examples that spring to mind are typing sue instead of use, RAM instead of RMA, things like that.
I'm worried in case this is a permanent thing, is it possible to actually become dyslexic rather than be born dyslexic?
It's just so weird because I am a good speller, though I do say so myself, and I don't like suddenly being unable to spell properly.
:-\

I don't think so- that's happened to me before- I've even forgotten how to spell words like "Milk". Scared the heck out of me for a while, but it passed. I think. There was also this other time, that I temporarily lost the ability to recognize a word as a unit... slowed my reading down for a while.

I'm not sure what causes it- maybe personal stuff or when we have something on our mind?

I don't think dyslexia can be acquired, but who knows.

Wow! They found a dyslexia for cure!

Actually, dyslexia can develop through trauma to the left side of the brain, where the language center of the brain resides. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that you may have developed it, so I wouldn't panic or anything.  :)

If you feel it's a serious concern, I'd consult with a doctor about your symptoms, and they do have tests for it, so it might be something you'd want to look into.

Do you have a Vitamin regimen you are currently on ? ?

Ginko Buloba is an herbal supplement that has been shown to help with this...

I guess I'll give it a few more days and see if it passes.
I find if I think carefully about what I'm typing or writing and do it slowly I don't seem to have a problem, so far this post has been OK where usually there'd be at least 10 mistakes.
I'm not currently taking vitamins of any sort but I am on medication, don't think this is relevant though as I've been on it for, what, two years or so.
If it doesn't pass soon I'll look into Ginko Buloba, thanks.

Note: by typing very slowly I managed to only make one mistake here, which was bene instead of been.

That may be the case, which is what worries me . . . until recently I could type probably 60wpm with almost no errors.
Now I can type at around 20-30 with a few errors, and if I aim for my usual speed I get too many to make it worthwhile typing that fast because I waste so much time correcting the mistakes.

I'm sure it's not a new keyboard, I've been using this one (well . . . my one, I'm using a different PC right now) for a few months and it's been perfectly fine, that's not a problem.
quaxo - it's in my profile, I don't have a problem with people knowing how old I am.  I'm currently 17.  Any specific reason?

Have you considered getting some typing software?  It certainly couldn't hurt to take a refresher course.

I guess it couldn't hurt, not that I don't get enough practice but some more structured exercises might help.
Yesterday I thought it was getting better but I think I was wrong.

I just noticed, I can touch type. The problem is, if I ever realize that I am, I suddenly start thinking about it, and I start hitting the wrong keys. It's almost like my cerebellum knows how to change what I'm thinking into the appropriate finger movements to type it, and my cerebrum hasn't got a clue.

I've even managed to set myself to the wrong home position, which resulted in me going to qqq, fiifkw,x instead of www.google.ca

what does this have to do with the topic? Well, I've never used a typing program... but i suppose the copiuos programming I do provides plenty of practice.

Where's that book you were supposed to be writing oh wise one??

Interesting thought actually, I may well have been just thinking too much.
After a few days' break my typing does seem better actually . . . maybe it was stress related or something.

I wonder how much of it is being mindful of the task at hand?  (I have the same problem, and I sometimes wonder if it isn't because we're multitasking in our minds, and thinking about too many things, and worrying, and trying to do too much at once.)  I wonder if this becomes habit after a while, and we kind of sabotage ourselves?

Cal -- in no way am I being critical.

Now that I have a little less going on my typing seems to be getting better.
