    Computer keeps on restarting
    « on: August 22, 2008, 06:59:21 PM »
Hey, its me again, but this time i have a problem with another computer, my dad's.

    Computer specs:
AMIBIOS (C) 2995 American Megatrends, Inc.
    939Dual-VSTA BIOS P1.10
    AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
    Windows XP
    2.00 GHz
    Service Pack 2

Well the problem is that, every time the computer goes to the Windows XP logo loading screen, after a few seconds, it restarts and keeps doing it over and over again. I have tried to do it in Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration and Start computer normally. I get the same problem, restarting on the Window's logo loading screen.

Also here's some other important information, the last few usage of the computer, the computer's background image was white and saying please use your antivirus to clean your computer, your computer is infected. Well since my dad didn't have an anti virus, I installed the one I use, AVG Free 8.0 Anti virus. After installing and doing a scan, it found 27 infections and 48 Spywares, it removed and treated them all and they were in the 'Virus Vault'. After viewing some of the virus' and spyware, I cleaned the vault, I deleted all of them from the vault. So hoping that everything was completed, I restarted the computer, however there was still a white background. So I told my dad I'll find some help for it later, when I have some time, (I was going to ask you guys) but however after that day, the computer keeps restarting.

One more thing, when I start the computer this comes up, it's a bit unusual

    Pri Master : Maxtor 6L250R0 BAH41F90
ULTRA DMA Mode-6, S.M.A.R.T. Capable but Disabled
    Pri Slave   : ST3120022A   3.54
ULTRA DMA Mode-5, S.M.A.R.T. Capable but Disabled

If you need more information please let me know, I am trying to locate my XP CD so I can attempt to do a Recovery.

    Thanks a lot,

First of all, you need to make sure, your computer is 100% clean, so go here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html
Restarting may be due to infection still present, or some hardware problems, like overheating.
White background is a leftover from some infections, and it's easy correctable: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic82723.html, post #2

Just looking at original post info - safe mode - did you do some digging to check on various things? - assuming you can stay in that mode.

I'd try and do as much investigation from there as possible - and am wondering from there whether the HDD's will appear OK or not.  No obvious fix I can think of right now but - certainly more digging if you can do it.  Something obviously is making proper Win boot more than cranky!

Does BIOS show drives properly as what you'd expect?  Can you boot from a boot disk?

Yeah - saw that but what I was thinking of was digging within safe mode regarding things you could temporarily turn off - pare down to as basic as possible before trying full win boot.  Diagnosis by isolation sorta deal.

        Sorry not much help.

Will it boot to Windows CD?

I'm still looking for it, don't know where my brother left it.

          That would eliminate some possibilities...

Can you please elaborate a bit more on that, because i can't really understand that, I'm not really a computer fixing type of person, sorry for being a bit difficult

              Yeah, you can try....
Reseat RAM. If you have more than one stick, try one at a time.
              Also...
Unplug everything, but keyboard, and mouse. Remove video card, if separate, and try again.

also one more thing, about disk boot, is it possible if i can d/l the files for an XP boot diskette and i can move it to an empty brand new diskette and it would act as a boot disk?

Yeah, but it'll only boot to A:>\ prompt, so....
