You don't know why you were rolling on the floor laughing? I'm serious, there are torchbearers at every ceremony. They are all at night just so they have an excuse to use torches. All ceremonies have big fires also. The ceremonies are also secret, so I cannot elaborate. As a torchbearer, I can tell you that torches suck as a light source. Plus, the torchbearers always get the candidates lost. It's not intentional, but it does add an extra scare to being led around in the woods in the dark by half-naked guys with torches.
