Why will my external speakers not work? When i plug in to the ports the tower speaker cuts off and the externals will not work. What could be causing this? Is there some setting I can check? thx

Try upgrading your sound card drivers... They might not support your speakers, but could with the new drivers...

what kind of speakers do you have? are they digital or analog also, are you trying to force 5.1+ on a two speaker sound card.  Also what sound card do you own?
