Microsoft to offer free security
« on: November 19, 2008, 09:50:10 AM »
Should be interesting to see how this impacts the Antivirus companies..

---

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced it will offer a free anti-virus and security solution from the second half of next year.

It will stop selling OneCare, its all-in-one security and PC management service, from the end of June 2009.

As long as they're burying One Care i see this as a step in the right direction...
Albeit a small step.
I wonder who the Vendor is... ::)

Yeah I was curious about that as well but couldn't find really any specific details about who the vendor was. Totally agree with you too on getting rid of One Care was never a fan of that.

Looks like they are going at it alone.

Code-named “Morro.”

But why? Windows Defender is a joke and One Care sucks.

Built on Microsoft’s award-winning malware protection engine, “Morro” will take advantage of the same core anti-malware technology that fuels the company’s current line of security products, which have received the VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, Checkmark Certification from West Coast Labs and certification from the International Computer Security Association Labs. The new solution will deliver the same core protection against malware as that offered through Microsoft’s enterprise solutions, but will not include many of the additional non-security features found in many consumer security suites.
