Your '08 haul
« on: December 25, 2008, 03:48:11 PM »
Just curious about what all you CH'ers out there received for the holidays.

I got a new monitor (now running a dual setup), an iHome, and some clothes.

I'm really enjoying this setup.

What all did you guys get?

remember people- it has nothing to do with spending time with your family or seeing old relatives... No... It's all about the presents. the presents. It's not giving that is the spirit of the season, it's recieving!

Now, to be a complete hypocrite- I got a computer desk and chair. And I gave nothing of value. (some DVDs)

I got to see all the family  in one place at one time and a great dinner. My only disappointment was a gift from one of my grand kids, a book titled, Computers for Dummies. Do you think he was trying to tell me something. Oh well.

Actually, those are a fairly good line of Computer books. Obviously it shouldn't be the only type of book in ones collection. I have

"Fixing and repairing PCs for Dummies" (1st edition AND 15th Edition)

    and

    "Windows 95 for Dummies"

Hmm, I think I'll start a "What computer books do you own" thread... off I go...

I got some money, which will pay for what I hope will be my last driving lessons, assuming I pass my test this time, some books, clothes, and the ubiquitous deodorant/shower gel combos.
Gave some shirts to my dad, CDs to my mum and sister, all well received.
Had a better Christmas than most years, but although I hate to complain it still wasn't great, so unfortunately still not a good time of year for me.

Do you not know anyone that will teach you how to drive? Most people have their parents teach them. If you were here, I would teach you to drive.

Are you talking about some sort of special driving license?

I don't know how it works in the US, but here, as far as I am aware, almost everybody takes driving lessons from a certified instructor.
If my parents taught me to drive I would have failed drastically anyway - they're good drivers, but as they passed their tests around 30 years ago, the requirements have changed a lot, so their driving styles, whilst perfectly safe for the real world, are not at all what's required to pass a test nowadays.

In California, your parents/friends can teach you some, but you're obliged to take certain number of lessons from certified instructor.

It's not required to take lessons here, as far as I know.
Just sort of necessary to pass, unless you have a friend who always drives in the way required to pass, which is highly unlikely as it's not practical in real situations.

WD Caviar Green drives use less power and support quieter, cooler-running desktop PCs and external storage devices.

Uh.. Bit of cash, bunch of random crap, wallet, some socks, uh.. Other random stuff I can't remember, my lil bro is getting me GTA IV for a late Christmas present after his next paycheck. I plan to get a road bicycle and strap a 49CC moped motor to it soon as I get another $50 or so for the motor, and about $75-125 for the road bike. Might get an 80CC motor 'cause the cops here are too stupid to tell the difference or question me.

I received some money from my aunt.  My spouse and I could afford nothing for each other.  The small project on which I wanted to work is delayed since two desktop systems crashed, and I'm reconfiguring between a desktop and a laptop.

I am struggling to keep Christmas in my heart past the date, and the season.  I stopped for a stranded motorist the other day.  He'd already made arrangements on his cell phone.  He thanked me, because I was the only one who stopped to check on him.  I didn't stop because I'm this great person.  I stopped because I'd want someone to stop for me.

So... you think one day they might actually be worth something, if maintained in working order?

Because I have one myself. haven't exactly taken good care of it, but it still works great.

Actually, the fact that I have the same card probably made it a bit easier for me to recognize.

the card above and on the left of it appears to be a PCI sound card, and the video card to the right of that I would guess to be an AGP card, likely "STB systems" (purely a guess based on what I've seen myself, heatsink positions, chip locations, etc).

a bit off topic, but here's an image I made some time ago with most (not all, I found another box after this shot with more old hardware)

even a 5 1/4" floppy. works too, which is pretty amazing, considering how I've neglected it since removing it from my 286  ;D

Is that all unused hardware BC?  As in, not pulled from a machine that's now in use?
I'll grab a snap of mine soon and compare, in fact I may start a thread on that.
I may need to find a bigger room first though, to spread it out.

almost all of it, it doesn't include anything I was using at the time.

I'm thinking of rebuilding my old PC (the one in the background, actually) using some of those parts.

two of those WD drives in the foreground are in my modified USB enclosure that I modded so as to allow using two IDE drives with the circuit board from the enclosure.

there were a few CD-ROM drives and other stuff I found afterwards too, but I was far to lazy to take another shot.

I'd need a whole room to lay out all the stuff I've got. Maybe when I straighten up in the other room I'll see if its remotely possible. If only gravity where toggleable...
