How to remove a virus from System Volume Information?
« on: January 31, 2009, 09:00:34 AM »
Hi,

I will tell the whole story with my virus because I know that this helps a lot.

A few weeks ago I downloaded some crack software, my BitDefender Antivirus program detected a virus in it but as I knew that cracks get detected as viruses from time to time I turned off the Bitdefender and executed the crack. It turned out to be a virus/trojan after all...anyway, I thought I got rid of it (I used WinXP Manager and other programs to kill its processes and than I deleted it). But yesterday I got an error message from bitdefender saying that it cannot scan a file in System Volume Information/_restore......(it doesn't show the full path) I tried to find that path and delete the file manually but windows wouldn't let me access the specific folder. Anyway, now, every time windows comes out of standy mode BitDefender shows me a message that it has found a virus in the same location and deleted it.
This is the story.
Now, what I think happened.
I think that windows (or some other software) somehow made a restore point with the virus running. But I can't find an explanation for the virus warning when leaving standby mode.
My questions are: How can I remove that virus? and, Is it possible that a virus is still running on my PC?

To clean all restore points:

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Uncheck "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You cannot see these files as they are hidden by Windows.

This was an answer far more objective than what RobPomeroy used to give me.
