Thermal Paste, Grease etc

I'm going to upgrade my CPU from a Athlon 64 to a Athlon 64x2 Dual Core. I have not done this before!

I would like to know what thermal paste or grease etc would you recommend. I have read up about it on a few site's, but would like the opinion of some people who have had hands on experience. (instead of my thermal paste is the best etc)

Also, CPU cleaning products, any recommendations??

Also, would the fan from my Athlon 64 work well with the 64x2 dual core. I have 'smart fan' installed. Is it just a question of monitoring it??

Thermal paste can be partly personal preference.  I like OCZ Freeze or AC MX-2, others will no doubt recommend AS5.
For cleaning, use a q-tip/cotton bud and rubbing alcohol, or a product such as Arcticlean or equivalent (I use some Akasa fluid myself).
Whether your heatsink/fan will work - check the specs on the CPUs.  If the TDP of the newer one is the same, it should be fine but keep an eye on temps.  If the TDP is higher, I recommend you buy a new cooler.

TDP = Thermal Design Power.  it's the maximum heat output of the processor, in Watts.
I sued the abbreviation because it's almost always abbreviated to that, especially in spec sheets.

      Ditto for Artic Silver no.5. Picked mine up at Radio Shack. I use Isopropyl alcohol 91% to clean cpu & heatsink. They sell a 70% Isopropyl alcohol which has more water in it. The 91% cost a little more but is better because of the lower h20 content. You can buy at any pharmacy.
