Ok, AVG 7.5 has decided that it's gonna stop the updates, so I need a new free AV. any suggestions?

Avast, go to Avast.com and download the FREE Veresion. It requires a annual registration but is totally FREE and in my opinon a lot better than Avg.

I've been using AVAST for about two years & have been touble free.
Click on the Free Software tab to download (last tab on the right of the main menu)

      Seconded.

I find it faster, safer and more manageable.

Avast by far. It has features none other offer and it updates sometimes multiple times a day instead of just once every 24 hours like the others.

Yeah. I hear OneCare works really well though. I can get it for free because my brother's computer has it. It works in with Microsoft and is good. Can anyone confirm this?  :D

Well...out of the 6 replies you've had here...4 of them recommended avast!...which is also free.  Compared to other free antivirus products out there...you'd be much better off with what was recommended.  However, you're free to choose what you want.

And by the way...OneCare isn't free.

...and it's a waste of time (OneCare), being discontinued by July 1st anyway.

what's wrong with AVG? I have it on a vista computer which I'm using and it's not bugging me at all or hogging up resources AND it's the latest version.

I bet those people who say to stay away from AVG are those who have had problems installing or using on their computers, I wonder  ???

AVG, starting with ver 8.0 became another bloated program, which can't be even removed through Add\Remove, but needs a special tool to do it.
Yes, I'm one of hundreds of people, who had serious problem with installing, or running it properly, and I'm not a computer newbie. On a top of it, I've been working with security issues for number of years. If AVG is working fine on your computer, it doesn't mean a bit.
I've been using AVG for many years until the ver. 8.0 came out.
Use Google, and do some reading. Go to AVG forums, and you'll see.

Also I have found in my years with AVG...the 'resident scanner' never actually REMOVES anything.

You can tell it to delete the virus...and what? the same file is detected as being virus-ed with the same thing

For me, I can uninstall it thru the add/remove panel in windows and yes, the virused file I can get that sent to the virus vault where i can delete it manually.

Yes, we know, it works for you. That fine, and I hope it'll stay that way, but unfortunately number of people are disappointed with it.
