Run Programs from External harddrive
« on: March 21, 2009, 04:54:45 PM »
Can someone assist me please

I'm looking at purchaseing a small laptop so I can carry whilst traveling, something like HP Mini 100

So what I'm after is a way to run software from a thumb drive or external hard drive so I don't have to load large software onto the laptop.

Can this be done

Thanks

You shouldent run programs from a  flash drive, flash drives arent fast enough to do this efficiently.

If your mini-laptop is running Linux or Windows, you should be able to use an external CD drive, if it doesnt already come with one.

You can buy an external CD Drive here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000100420&bop=And&Order=PRICE

Or, you can copy the contents of a CD from "My Computer" and then copy them to a folder on the thumb drive, and use the installer that you copied to install the programs you with to use.

Lots of stuff specifically for a thumb drive at www.portableapps.com

You can substitute pretty much everything but Windows with a portable version.
