The public RC will apparently be coming in May 2009, and not in April as previously rumored.

I thought it was possible to upgrade from windows 7 RC to windows RTM?

I would like MS to tell us a projected release date for the RTM as well but of course you want MS to work as long as they need to be sure you guys are not going to find windows 7 hard to use and not good at all  :)

windows 7 will be a retail product, so it will NOT be free.

if the release candidate is free then upgrading to the RTM version will NOT be an option on account of the fact that it makes purchasing the product unnecessary.

I think it was that if you had RC version, then it can be upgraded to retail version but you have to buy the retail version to get all the stuff. Nobody said the upgrade was going to be free ....

So you technically don't have to reformat PC or have to install some other working OS.

ahhh, you mean technically possible, not automatically- ok.

I can't say myself. I do know that the windows 2000 beta... sorry, the "Cairo" beta- can be "upgraded" to the fill w2k, if I remember right.

That's what I'm hearing MS say. Like the beta of Windows 7 CANNOT be upgraded to RTM directly so you have to reformat your PC with the official Windows 7 installer. But in any case, I am also hearing that a reformat and new OS installation may be good idea in long run  :D

That's true, but if the RC has a time limit like the Windows 2K evaluation version them the time limit might remain after upgrading.

I wouldn't think so. I heard MS saying you have to either reformat OR upgrade to RTM before the expiration date of the RC.

well- yeah, but with windows 2000, if you upgraded the evaluation version to professional, it would still bluescreen after 30 days with the "END_OF_EVALUATION_PERIOD" error- even though it was supposed to be upgraded fully.

I imagine they'll actually test the upgrade functionality a bit more thoroughly this time around...

As an MS Beta tester i can say they have said that not everyone who has the Windows 7 Beta will not be offered the RC...
They plan on pruning those numbers.
Of course it will get out there though.

Some Beta testers will be selectively offered the Full ver. free when it is released...at least this is how they have done it in the past.

That's why i submit as many bug checks as i can..... ;)

My question is: Is windows 7 better/different/worse then Vista. I'm still a XP guy...
Wish they made another version of XP :P

I think windows 7 should be an improvement over windows 7 but you gotta get used to the new taskbar if you're jumping from XP to windows 7, and I think you can upgrade directly from XP to windows 7, bypassing windows vista.

XP wasn't a bad system internally, just it's graphics were a little too plasticy at times and the security needed beefing up since many a hackers were targeting it. .

A windows XP with vista aero interface and vista's taskbar and start menu? That would be tight but compatibility is what we would want with the programs you use most often.
