    downgrading to Windows 98
    « on: April 07, 2009, 06:15:56 PM »
I know this probably is a very stupid suggestion but ever since I upgraded to XP, my Windows 98 computer has been running so slow it is almost unusable.  I know I need to increase the RAM, etc. but would anyone suggest returning to the Windows 98 OS since it worked just fine on this computer?

A Win98 machine will normally not have anywhere enough horsepower to run XP...
    Post the machine's specs please...

Not to step on Patio's toes but he's totally right. Upgrading from a really old system of Windows to... a newer one is like swopping an abicus to a calculator. You probably don't have the system power. Best to upgrade to a new PC.

Let's stop making assumptions and wait for the original poster to come back with specs. You can't tell someone they need to go out and get a new machine if you don't know what they've already got.

In 2001 I had a homebuilt system: Abit KT7a motherboard with an AMD Athlon 1800+ with 512 MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive running Windows 98SE. When XP came out that autumn, I installed it with absolutely no problems and used that machine very happily for 3 years. It is silly to say straight away that a "Windows 98 machine" cannot run XP. Without knowledge of the hardware specs it is absolutely pointless to comment like that. I have a 3 GHz P4 hyperthread cpu and 1 GB of RAM. I could install Windows 98 tomorrow if I wanted to; would that make it unsuitable for XP, because it is now a "Windows 98 machine"? Of course not.

If you read the original message it states that the computer is running really slow 'almost' unusable. This says to me that the computer cannot handle the programme. Am I missing something here???

the infestation of malware that was present might not have been tuned well for windows xp.

    lol

Actually, come to think of it, that may be the case.

All the people who I know that use windows 98 are almost always heavily infected when I check their PCs. Everything runs "fine" to them, so they don't bother.

But, if they upgrade to XP, a lot of the malware might not work properly on XP (I can see the dialogs- "Sorry, we were unable to erase your personal files. Please erase your personal files manually.")- and it will run much slower.

regardless, we need the PC specs to now exactly whats going on- additionally we don't really have a hard and fast definition of "slow and unusable".  :)

I know I only have 128 RAM and a slow processor as that is what the other guys have told me.  So I thought I would see about downgrading back to my old OS to see if that works.  I have a new machine also but this one is my backup one and for games and stuff for my granddaughter.  But we can't even get to anything hardly cause it's so slow getting there or doing anything.  I like to never got to this posting as it must have taken me 10 minutes to crawl there!

Thanks in advance to everyone who offers their suggestions/help.

No worries, just want to know what we're dealing with before we give advice.

Yeah, that system would really struggle to run XP. 128MB RAM is part of the problem. The processor is also a bit slow. You'd be much better off leaving 98 on it.
