Whats with the MS Nag screen?
    « on: April 24, 2009, 11:12:34 PM »
Every time I start my computer I have this Microsoft Nag Screen, telling me about how much they care if I have a real copy of my windows operating system and the benefits of sending my details to them.

Well that's one of the biggest jokes I've heard this year.  :-* my grits.

Can I circumvent this annoyance?  8)

Wants you to send them details and personal information? If i'm correct, that's a virus.

Can you post a screenshot of it?

Thanks Carbon Dudeoxide, I've just been bypassing it by shutting it down.
I'll get a shot of it next time it appears then and let you see what appears on my screen then.

Actually ... no time like the present this is the notification screen I see.

I hope its not a virus because I have it on two machines now. :'( :'(

MS has rolled out an update to WGA Notifications. It is downloaded automatically by Windows Updates and if the previous version of WGAN was not installed, a prompt to install is presented at the next and subsequent logins.

I hesitate to ask the obvious question....

        Deafening silence ....  :)

PS Don't ask how to bypass or crack WGA.

Maybe I can get away with just switching one on at a time. Hahahaha

Well that i cannot advise on...if you're not legit you need to get legit.
They're getting very good at this.

I tested this on a brand new Vista build (legit) and let the registration process purposely run out just to see.
It got progressively harder and harder to use the machine normally and eventually crippled most important tasks.

I remember there being a virus out there that simulates the WGA application and asks for personal information such as email address, home address, contact number, credit card number, ect.

I don't have much time to look it up, but the google results seem to back my memory up:

              good point carbon.

I don't think WGA actually brings up a prompt asking personal details- it just says, "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting" or something similar in a balloon.

Once infected, the virus registers itself as a new system driver service named "wgavn" and has the public display name of "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Notification."

That's not what it says on that screen photo. Sounds like the recent (April 09) WGA Notification update to me.

So what you are saying then is that if I dont reply and I have a pirated copy, eventually I will lesser and lesser performance from my machine to the point of standstill.

                And

that if I have a legit copy and dont reply I will get lesser and lesser performance to the point of standstill.  :'(
