I use BitDefender internet security 2009. It is not moneyfree but I'm not complaining on anything.
It is the best antivirus software that I ever had.
    BitDefender Site

As far as detecting certain virus definitions, most of them are the same.  I think the user interface is where people go separate ways.

I use AVG FREE, Spybot S&D(with the tea timer DISABLED!)...............However, if I suspect a virus on my system my strategy changes.  I'll update definitions and scan with AVG, Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Kaspersky Online scanner.  Once that is done, I'll post a Browser HiJacking log for some nerd to interpret for me ;D    I'm sure I can learn to interpret them myself, but I don't want to delve too deep into security right now....I'm busy learning the varous functions of Windows, still.

I find Norton to do exactly what it say's on the tin but it's not wallet friendly. But you do get what you pay for because it's constantly updated. Also have malwarebytes running side by side and I never have any issues.

Don't use more than one av program at a time. Two antivirus programs can be just as bad, if not worse, than none at all.

After AVG 8 got bloated and useless I tried Avast for a while, but it kept giving me lots of false positives.
I'm using Avira now and it seems pretty good and easy to set up.  Also seems to scan much quicker than the others.

Avira AntiVir. It is by far the best free antivirus, it has the best detection rates too.

Used AVG 7.5 until 8.0 then I switch to AntiVir at the recommendation of a computer tech friend and have never been sorry for switching.

According to Maximum PC's (great pg magazine) artical AntiVir get a killer 8 out of ten rating while Avast & AVG free only get 5's.

      Go with Avira AntiVir

Mcafee is close to useless in my opinion.

It uses up your system's  resources only to provide you with weak security and a low detection rate.

Not to mention how fiddly it is.

For those of you that are yet to find a suitable AV what exactly are you looking for in an AV?

Y'all do realize that there isn't a single AV that will detect every single threat and allow you do what ever the heck you want with out worry.

The best thing to do is pick an AV keep it updated and use safe practices when on the net.

It needs to have next to no impact on my system; it needs to cause no problems with Windows or other programs; it needs to do what I tell it to (e.g. if I tell it not to automatically update, it should follow that setting); it needs to give good real-time protection; the interface needs to be usable.
I can give reasons why every antivirus I've tried fails at least one of those.

For a good while I used no antivirus, just common sense.  I had no problems whatsoever.
I decided to jump back on the antivirus wagon, partly to see what was around and partly "just in case".  Due to the lack of programs that actually work as I want them to, it looks like I'll soon be back to no antivirus.

It appears to be just a quicker way to set a System Restore Point.
If so, personally I would create it the old fashion (and reliable) way by going to Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore.

Give Nod32 a try.  Fast scanning, lightweight (low memory footprint), advanced heuristic scanning (better at detecting new viruses before they're defined) and affordable.

there are FREE alternatives that do just as well. If you have one that's updating at least once a day, and you have a decent firewall on and a malware scanner that can be updated, I'm pretty sure you just have to be careful to reduce virus and crap coming to your pc.

A Restore Point will help zilch against some of the newer infections...they will simply re-create themselves.

I tried NOD32.  I was very impressed with v2.7, but v3 seems much heavier.
I also tried the security suite, but it actually destroyed my network connection, I had to reformat.

CA Antivirus Security Suite, out of the 3 AV programs I've used, AVG, Norton and CA, it's definatly the best.

AVAST is still one of the best if you mean free. CA's all fine if you want a paid complete featured internet suite

Sure, that's all good too  :D I meant free for life, non subscription but if you can get a decent paid antivirus for free, then that's good too  ;D I have heard more complaints about Norton than I do for CA.

That's because CA isn't extremely well know...if you say Norton, and nothing else, then they will probably say "The antivirus?", but if you say CA, they will most likely say something like "What?" or "QUOI?!"

Maybe CA wants people to test out their obscure software and be bothered with all the problems or potential problems coming with it so they gave away their keys LOL  ;D

Because a software isn't well known, then more likely to me, they're not getting main stream help with bug catching and and last I was told, CA wasn't going for mainstream users, even though home users can use it.

I'd rather not have obscurity playing against me if I could help it.

Yeah, but I'm alright with that. None of the free ones can compare. And among pay versions, it's one of the most comprehensive, yet lightweight ones. So pleased with it, it's now on all of my computers and I recommend it to anyone willing to pay. It's definitely worth the price.

I agree with quaxo, I use Kaspersky too and I thinks it's the best out there.

Yeah, Kaspersky is nice, but I didn't want to pay for it. So Avast is on my pc for now. However.... is Panda's cloud antivirus any good? See the link here:  http://www.cloudantivirus.com/

Panda Antivirus I hear is a decent antivirus software (the paid version) so I expect their cloud antivirus to be somewhat good?

In a hypothetical sense...you don't necessarily have to pay for it *Cough*....

Norton & McAfee. Resource hogs and really don't protect any better than anything else.

Question: "If they're not good, why are they the two most widely known?"
              Answer: Marketing.

You see when I used Norton a while back I didn't have many issues with it, apart from memory hogging!

But I know its terrible now.

*cough* I think I used Norton 2005 I cannot remember.

Sophos is a nice AV too. I can get it for free from my university's computer servicing website.

Against what people are saying about Norton, I think it has improved in 2009. Starts up A LOT faster than it used to, and doesnt take much memory at all. I use that, and Kaspersky on my other 2 computers. I got 3 keys free for kaspersky, and 6 free for norton, so thats one reason why I am using them. (And yes, I got them for free legally lol).

I would have to agree that Norton 2009 is indeed a very good Antivirus, one of the top AV products out there.

Pretty surprising if you ask me, looking back at Norton 360. :P

Norton wasn't a bad product when you're talking about the product doing its job of protecting the pc from viruses. It's just that Norton was using up way too much memory and thus causing havoc, but seems like Symantec's been addressing people's complaints.

It's like AVG isn't really a bad product for virus protection, but it's the fact that it comes with all the other stuff that makes it not as desired for many people.

is indeed Norton getting better? Norton was hijackware last i was informed. It hijacked the resources so it's a resource gobbler. But it does it's job of antiviral protection though ....

the main thing Norton draws from is peoples wallets.

I’ve tested nod32 and it caught everything, and so did avira antivir. But I kind of like avira’s look and feel better. So I would go for avira.

it's all up to you. The best antivirus is your own brain. If you have an antivirus, no matter how good it is at this point, if you still let the crapware get through, you're computer is still toast.

                    I actually used to use:

                    Woolworths Internet Security

It cost me £5 a year and was constantly updated , it had a game mode and it wasnt at all gutsy in the processor department!

BUT YOU CAN'T GET IT FROM WOOLIES FOR £5 NOW so... I am sad :'( lol

anyway , you might still be able to get it from its producers though maybe not for £5 lol

The software was made by panda

                    http://www.pandasoftware.co.uk

I'm sure there is a global / us site too!
