I have the EXACT same problem. disk management is empty apart from my dvd drives. i have the safely remove devices thing in the taskbar. I have been using a lot of different virus scan programs to get rid of whatever is doing this but to no avail.
Something is blocking disk management and wen i plug anything in, windows recognizes it (it does the connect sound) and it charges, AND its even shown in device manager, but not in my computer or disk management.
I've already scanned for rootkits and done virus scans and everything i could think of. Updating drivers does nothing. Its not because of something I have installed. I haven't installed anything new since it happened.

Im using xp version 5.1 build 2600, service pack 2.
my hardware isn't the issue but in case its helpful,
    AMD athlon 64 3500+ (2.2ghz)
    2 gb ram
    asus a8r32 mvp deluxe mboard

I'm not sure exactly when it happened. a few weeks ago. I have tried reinstalling drivers. This is the first problem i have ever had that has required me to post on a forum. This really has me stumped.
I could export my registry and reinstall xp but I really dont want to go thru all that again. Last reinstall was only 6 months ago. maybe less.
It may not be malicious software but I can't think of anything else that could have caused this.
Hope someone has come across this before. thanks

i tried rootkit revealer and it showed a couple of entries in the registry that i couldn't delete. I scanned with Avira and it found them too but apparently it couldnt delete them either. This may be just the tip of an iceberg.
I remember doing a fix before where the controlset001,002 were used by a virus. any ideas on how i can get rid of these hidden entries?

one more thing! When i first discovered disk management was empty, i tried clicking rescan disks. nothing changed in disk management but several drives disappeared from My Computer. A restart fixed it. Something is screwing with disk management.

btw, I am using xp. the windows just look like vista.
