Vista Service Pack 2 Now Ready for Download
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:25:49 PM »

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 is now available for download. The Vista SP2 update includes new support for recording Blu-ray discs straight from the Vista OS, updated support for Bluetooth v2.1, and bug fixes that address slow shutdowns and mysterious crashes.

You can download Vista SP2 directly from Microsoft at its Web site (348MB) or it will be automatically delivered to your Vista system via Windows Update within a few weeks, according to Microsoft. You must have Vista SP1 installed on your system to install the SP2 Vista.

Never happened to me with any single update, but I tried to install it on my laptop today (through Windows update), and it failed twice (??).
I downloaded standalone file, and I'll try again, time permitting.

What never happened, a Service Pack installation via automatic updates?

I never had any problem with installing any single update, or service pack. This is the first issue.
I'm gonna leave my desktop alone until I'll see what's going on with standalone installation on my laptop.
The whole installation went little bit strange.
It downloaded, and started installation fine.
Then, Windows restarted to complete the installation, but upon restart the message came up:
Quote
Some changes couldn't be completed. Windows will try again on restart.
Restarted. Stage 1 went up to 96%, and:
Quote
Service Pack didn't install. Reversing changes
I tried twice.

Open up command prompt (CMD) as the administrator

Then type "slmgr -rearm" without the quotes.

Wait one minute (don't do anything) and a message should pop up saying it worked.

After rebooting the pc, retry sp2 installer again. This trick actually worked and I now have sp2 installed on my vista machine when it kept giving me error that it couldn't install and computer had to be reboot to reverse changes made.

Try that and if you're wondering, my vista machine is still genuine like it was before, nothing changed in terms of whether or not activation issues happened ;D

After reading this topic yesterday, I opened Windows Update and had it check for updates.  It notified me that I had 1 Important update to install, which was Service Pack 2.  Today, I installed it.  The installation completed without a hitch, in my Vista Home Premium laptop.  The whole process took about 25 minutes and required 3 restarts.

yes... some of us actually own genuine copies...

My installation went fine, I started it when I went to bed and when I woke up it was at the login screen and had SP2.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Must be some of my software playing games with me.
I downloaded standalone version, and right now, I disconnected from the net, and I disabled Comodo totally.
Unfortunately, the first warning already came up:

I'll see what will happen.
Disabling Avast will be next,.

I'm not trying to extend Vista activation period, but I'm trying to install service pack.

i meant you do what i said and it will hopefully allow the sp2 to instal'; I know we're not trying to extend vista activation period but by having doing that on MY PC. the sp2 finally installed without problems.

I saw this trick on other forum, and it worked for me to fix my uninstallable sp2 so try it out. It'll get your pc working hopefully..

See the following link here, this is what I am trying to tell you, this is where I found the solution to getting the sp2 to install finally, and that is where the solution I provided above came from:

Disabling Comodo didn't help.
I didn't want to waste more time for investigating, which program, or service is preventing the thing from installing correctly, so I went to msconfig, I disabled all startups, and all non-Micro$oft services, restarted computer, and the SP2 installed without any hiccups.
Done.

Did I say without a hitch?

Just after doing a system restore to undo all the changes SP2 made.
- My USB 3G modem stopped working
- Actually, all USB ports stopped working
- Programs would randomly stop responding

So, what's up Microsoft?

did you uninstall SP2 first? You can do that can't you unless you've deleted all the backup stuff made during SP2 installation.

i wonder now, you can undo the system restoration, I'm sure of that so ... see if you can't go back to the post-SP2 state before you wanted to go backwards and ee if that won't get it to work, then try uninstalling sp2 this time.

But that's the opposite of what I just did.

Obviously something wasn't right, so I undid it, and everything's fine again. The intro to SP2 did say something like this "Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 will greatly improve hardware compatibility and usability" - well, it did the opposite for me.

Anyway, all service packs do mainly is reinstall all previous updates, as well as a few new ones. All previous updates are installed, so I think I'll be alright.

The way you typed it here makes me feel that  the problems happened when you attempted to get rid of SP2 and that you were ok with SP2 on.

let me guess, the old, "service pack installed gigs of porn" issue. notwithstanding the files created and modified dates are long before when the service pack was installed.

Mother: what are these? sexy blonde.jpg? hmm. must be ... *censored*! BILLY! GET IN HERE!

      Billy: What.

      Mother: WHAT is this?

Billy: Oh erm... I installed service pack 2, there's a err.... known issue, with it accidentally downloaded thousands upon thousands of innappropriate, high resolution images.

Mother: Well, by golly it's destroyed our PC! there's absolutely no room left! Although I think it's the same amount of room as we had before the service pack, but what do I know!

windows put out a beta "fix" as a public release

beta \= service pack. or does it?

            doubtful.

MS performs exhaustive regression testing on even the smallest fix before releasing it. MSKB articles with un-regression tested hotfixes are clearly marked.

a SP consists of well tested fixes.

basically you can find a large number of issues via google with any released OS version and any available SP for that version via a Google search, such as :
            "windows 2000 service pack +BSOD"

            or

            "windows NT4 service pack +BSOD"

now, the relative amounts of hits for each might indicate that there are far fewer problems with NT4 then 2000, 2000 to XP, and XP to vista, but this is not the case.

NT was marketed solely to businesses. most Consumers weren't aware it existed and even if they were it was far more expensive then their "consumer" OS's, such as 95 and 98.

2000 was marketed mostly to businesses, but got far more consumer use because ME was so unpopular.

XP was the merging of the two into a single OS- divided into Home and professional editions, but from a common codebase.

For each new version, the number of savvy users dropped, with a large number of grandma's now trying to install SP2 in Vista, it's not surprising we might encounter issues.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
