    Window's NT Server 4.0 install
    « on: June 07, 2009, 08:49:07 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm new here but i'v been around. I have a Dell Power edge 2500 server i'm trying to get up again and it was obtained with out any hard drives. I got a Compaq 9.1 gig Ultra wide scsi hard drive for it and Windows NT Server 4.0 as a network opperating system. My problem is, the scsi hard drive was formated and when i try to install NT it doesn't reconize the scsi hard drive and ask for the Manufactor's supplyed hardware disk. I'v searched Compaq's website with no luck and i'v read here in Computerhope's website that scsi drives need a scsi utility  and not f-disk. I believe the scsi hard drive is formated but the partition is not active. This server i'm working on has 6 hard drive bay's in it and  you unlatch them and pull them out the front. So each hard drive doesn't have a daisy chain cable hooked to it, but it must be inside the puter and i duno if i even have the hard drive in the correct bay.
Tk's for your help C-ya Scott

The SCSI controller may be an addon card.....so not neccessary Dell drivers.
    Check under the hood.

Tks Patio, I have checked under the hood. There are no additional card's. I think i need to obtain a dell scsi drive instead of a compaq drive.

If i'm not mistaken they should work on any machine...
Are you sure the drive is healthy ? ?

Tks Patio, I do not know if the drive is healthy. This server is the only puter i have that uses scsi drives. If i had a enclosure that accept's a scsi drive and usb it into one of the other puters i could test it. I'v used the ide version before to test and read hard drives. Tks Scott

Did you terminate the SCSI chain?

Tks JJ3000. This Dell 2500 server has 6 bay's in the front that you dock the hard drives in. It's not like a regular puter where you have a cable that connect the drives and on the last one you terminate the daisy chain.

The BIOS should be able to tell you something about the drives.  Maybe a low-level format tool or hard drive diagnostics or something like that.

Definitely look on Dell's support site for a driver pack.  There are probably some drivers you need to load at the start of the NT install.
