Comp wigging out on me

For awhile now my Vista has had some Virus problems but nothing too major since I got Stopzilla protection software. But even that wasnt enough to get rid of the problems. Hwoever they were minor problems slike the browser automaticly closing out it happened rarely so no biggy.
HOWEVER
Just the other day when I turned my comp on and logged in it froze on me. At first I thought it was just being slow so I let it stay for a little bit, after about Four hours when I came home from work it was still frozen. So I turned it off and turned it back on again and I logged back in. Luckily it went through this time but about fifteen minutes later it automaticly logged me back out again. What should I do?

Boot the pc into safe mode
run a virus/malware scan to remove what may not normally be removed when the pc is booted up
normally, after that is complete boot pc up normally.

the last time i had such an issue i did just what i mentioned above
and haven't had a issue since.
