    comcast and Wifi
    « on: July 12, 2009, 09:37:01 AM »
We used to use D-link to connect our computer and my sons computer but we recently (Friday) switched to Comcast Broadband (which we had before but a smaller speed)
They changed out the cable modem and gave us a wireless router (NETGEAR)
The problem is they took out my D-link and said I would not need it to connect my son's computer to. I called them (Comcast) to find out how to connect my sons pc and they were evasive and said call Dell. My warranty expired a couple of years ago and I an NOT calling them so they can charge me. I checked at the dell forums and installed the 1450 wireless USB adapter and my pc does not detect the driver.
    Do I need another cord?
     I am a WIFI Newbie!

    Any help appreciated  :)

    Hi!

Do you mean to tell us that when all this started, you had physical (wired) connections between your computer and your son's computer?  Was there a cable from each computer which connected to a router?

    Are these both desktop computers?

Does Comcast lease the wireless router to you?

no we had D link on both pcs ( I had the router and he had the d link usb thing)
my sons d-link was a usb drive
both cost over 100.00 at the time and worked great.
Yes these are both desktop pcs in different rooms.
Yes the wireless router is leased from Comcast

I think Comcast is just looking to make more money from you (surprise, surprise).  Shame on their technician for making you change your setup!

Is the D-link wireless?  (I don't think it is, the way you describe it.)

What reason was given to you for having to change to wireless?

You should have been able to use the router you had in place before Comcast.  I thought they were just in the business of getting the Internet to your premise.  (Their cable, their cable modem -- technically, you can even buy your own cable modem.)   You could swap out their router, put the D-link back in place, restart everything (including the modem) to see if it works.

          Men!  I tell ya...  ::)

So, where are we at, now?

The second computer doesn't want to connect to the wi-fi?

          Let me think about this...

What kind of error or message is on the second computer when it tries to connect?

            Comcast left it completely unconnected.
I have no idea how to connect this pc to my sons pc.
Basically they took everything out and off then hooked up the router and modem only to my pc and told my husband that I should call tech support later to configure the other pc and.....I called them and they said I had to talk to DELL
            I'm going in circles
             :-\

Unmitigated lazy bastards!  But I digress...  ::)

            My apologies.

What model of Netgear router did they give you?

We'll have to see if the wireless signal is on, so your son's computer can partake in the Internet.  Then we'll see about wireless encryption options.

No stickers on the bottom or back?

If there aren't, don't worry -- I'll have a go at the Netgear website.

Really basic question:  The Netgear router has wireless antenna on it, correct?
(I don't mean to be insulting -- I just want to be sure they gave you a wireless router.)

                All right...it's all good.

Thank you for your patience:  Did they give you a wireless router?  No, they gave me two tin cans and a string!   ::)

I have to chase some laundry, but I will give this further consideration when I return!
